I have had a fairly severe pain on the bottom of my foot. It's on the pad of the foot somewhere near the 3rd or 4th toe. It feels swollen--almost like I'm walking on a balled up kleenex or something. I was squeezing around on it this morning and I can almost feel a small knot between two toes, near the base of the toes.

I have been reading about Morton's neuroma, but don't know if that's it. I have no tingling or anything like that. I am going to my podiatrist, but they can't get me in for over a week. In the meantime, should I use heat or cold to make this feel a little better??

It would be foolish and irresponsible to offer even a temporary treatment recommendation without having any idea as to the diagnosis. Though I certainly cannot suggest that you don't have one, I have never known of a Morton's neuroma that can be felt by external palpation. I would recommend waiting for an actual diagnosis from the podiatrist whom you are about to see before attempting any treatment based entirely on guesses.

Just wondering if you got any real answers from your doc. I have the same symptoms and it has been hurting a lot lately. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow....

That sounds alot like what I had and I figured it was Plantar faciatis....basically inflammation of the plantar tendon/ligament on the bottom of the foot. I read alittle bit about it, then went and got a 'dorsi-flex' boot that I slept in. It basically stretches your foot up, so like your foot is flat on the ground then you pull foot up toward shin. I wore it for a week and it fixed the pain. You can also get a special sock you wear to bed that has a long extensions off the toe and you wrap ends around your knee/calf and tie off.

Clearly, the description given by the original poster offered nothing that might in any way be confused with plantar fasciitis, and what you have suggested would not be a reasonable treatment for the condition described by that questioner. But, in any event, it is terribly unlikely that someone who posted a single question 2 1/2 months ago would be still checked this site for a response.

More than likely it's PF, plantar fasciatis. I could be neuroma's also, my mother had those alot and had to have surgery. Mine was PF, but I wore a walking boot all of Sept. and also wore my dorsiwedge night splint while sleeping and my pain is almost gone. I also used a heat/massage wand to increase blood flow to areas--then massaged with my hands. Alot of this is common sense. Did you have an event or accident that suddenly caused the pain or continuous walking/running that could be aggravating foot?
You may want to get an xray if you had an accident. I did this just to rule out any broken bones.
If I were you, I'd apply ice if there's any swelling. When the swelling goes away, then you can apply heat and massage area. I would also get a device like the night splint that dorsi-flexes the foot while sleeping...this helped me tremendously. My Dr. said that podiatrists mainly want to give cortizone shots first, then try something else once the pain comes back. Waste of time in my opinion unless you have a very low pain tolerance. Good luck....

I also have what feels like a wad of tissue on the pad of my foot. I am diabetic and my sugar is not under control. I work 90 hours a week. During the day shift I am moving or standing quite a bit but when I work the overnight shift, I am sitting almost all night. When I look at the pad on my foot, it looks normal but feels very strange. I have spent all kinds of money on special shoes for diabetics and always end up going back to payless for the same kind of shoes I have always bought that are comfortable. I have no insurance to go see a podiatrist and any advice would be welcome.

It may well be a diabetic neuopathy. It may or may not help this particular condition, but you need to get your surgar under control. You cannot take your diabetes to a doctor, lay it on his desk and tell him to fix it and you'll pick it up when it's ready. Diabetes is a condition which needs intensive patient understanding and cooperation. YOU have far more to do with its control and status than does your doctor.

  10. Hi footdoctor,

Just wondering if you can shed any light on my situation. The pad of my right foot say between the big & 2nd toe becomes extremely painful after I spend any significant time walking on it, it gets so bad I can hardly stand on it or put any pressure on it, it feels numb inside my footware and only gets better when I take my shoe/runner off and message it.

I can't feel any lumps or anything just the bone ( both feet feel the same but there's no lain on the left). Thanks for any advice you can give.

I am new to the forum. I see the questions, but where are the docs replies?
I have the swollen, 'cotton' feel behind my Right toes. My sports medicine doc does not seem to know anything about it?? Where can I get info. on this?
At this point, NOTHING seems to help!

I have similar pain in pad of right foot, just to right of big toe (behind second toe), and numb toes at times. No inflamation obvious, just sore when walked on, as the foot bends and weight is put on the "ball" of the foot. Ouch!
Walk a lot in job; 8 hrs on feet. Went to Dr. with a previous pain, 8 mo.s ago. Gave me Cortizone shots - 2 in 2 wks= felt great after that, but that was before I started this "standing" job.

Nurse neighbor suggested ice packs and put legs "up" at night. That has been best solution so far, not total.... alittle discouraged (and suspisious) by other's lack of "specialist" remendy..... save me a few $40 co-pay's and buying $$$ expensive shoes.
Live w/ "some" pain...... for now?

I too have this same pain...I don't think it's PF as I've experienced that before and this is a new pain. It has been progressing slowly over the last several weeks to the point where it's sore to stand on. Same numbness feeling like standing on a cottom ball and pressure pain all around the 'pad' of the foot. Very sore to touch and slight swelling but no abnormal redness or lessions of any kind. I was thinking maybe arthritic pain in a toe joint, but I have no history of arthritis anywhere else. I am a runner and always where good running shoes specific to my foot dynamics...this has me stumped! ( no punn intended...LOL)

Same issue as described in the first post. It feels like a cotton ball is under my 2nd and 3rd toes on my left foot. It also looks as if these toes are spreading apart. I've never noticed this space / gap before. Any suggestions on treatment are appreaciated.
    Thanks

I have the same issue, ball of foot pain behind big and second toe. It has been diagnosed as metatarsalgia. Therapy, orthotics, and a cortisone shot have not helped. After x-rays, I am now looking at bunion and corrective surgery because apparently my bunion is putting pressure on the metatarsal of my second toe, pushing it down and creating pain. I am also developing a callus on the area behind the second toe and have swelling on the top and bottom.

Thanks. I've had the pain for about a month. I guess I'll give it a few more weeks and if it doesn't get better i'llgo see my Doctor.

I have this same problem. This is actually the second time I have had it and I believe the outcome is goign to be the same with this second one. the first time 8 years ago, my foot swelled and felt like I was walking on a stuffed sock and the pain was pretty darn good. It came and got really bad and then it started getting better, but my second and third toes started changing their shape. one culled up and looks like hammer toe and the other one got wider and they spread apart. the pain would come and go and the bump or knot would get big and then shrink but one day after a couple of years with it like that it kind of popped! I was walking barefoot and I stepped on a rock and felt an extremely painful pop feeling is all I can call it.

That was 8 years ago and now my right foot is doing the same thing and it is very painful. and my second and third toes are slightly spreading apart just like before. I would really like to find the answer to this question.

I walk on the sides of my feet it hurts so bad and that is hurting everything else up my ankles and legs and knees. My left foot still hurts. I was told it was hammer toe but why does it still hurt 8 years later. However, it does not swell anymore.

If someone knows please post the answer. It is nice to know others have the exact same thing. I was thinking arthritis??? Just a question. Does excessive sweating also bother any of you??

I would like to know where the answer is as well. Everyone is just guessing because they have the same question. Who has the answer?

I, like a lot of you, am having the same type of problem. The difference with my issue is it's both of my feet. It started last night. Swollen and painful "ball" right below the 3rd and 4th toes. Hurts a lot to walk. I did quite of bit of walking yesterday (had a lot of errands to do) in shoes that offer no support. I know that's what brought it on, but would like to know what it is exactly. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi all,

I had this problem for a while and thought it was just corns or something. By the time I had it looked at the ball of my foot was very swollen and painful, like walking on stones. It only gradually got worse and initially it did come and go depending how long I had been on my feet. It was diagnosed as metatarsalgia (not sure about spelling). I had a bunionectomy and my second toe was shortened. This didn't work so I tried orthotics but because of my job I couldn't get on with them. I have since had a further operation called a lapidus procedure which has also failed as the bones haven't fused properly. It cured the original problem but now I have pain in my mid foot.

From personal experience I would get this looked at for a diagnosis rather than leave it. Perhaps mine would of been better had I had the original operation earlier. Also it's worth trying hard to adapt to orthotics if you can.

    Good luck.
