I have a small amount of swelling and pain, especially upon touch, on the right side of my right foot about in the middle of the foot, that is about half way between the heel and the the little toe.
I am a 72 year old female runner in generally good health.

You seem to describing a location consistent with that of the styloid process of the base of the 5th metatarsal, which protrudes to one degree or another on everyone, its obviousness being more noted in long thin feet with little fat. It is an area which is easily injured in inversion twists and sprains of the foot, sometimes fracturing and sometimes with bone avulsion. It also is an area, which, due to its prominence, is simply subject to contusion and irritation. But all of this is speculative, and if what you are looking for is relief, you first need a real diagnosis by hands-on examination and perhaps an x-ray. See a well-vetted Board Certified podiatrist and stop your running until you do so.

I too have this exact same type of pain. No one seems to know what it is, but it is a highly shrill and sporadic type of pain. I am also a female, not quite your age but about a decade behind you. I am not a runner.

I am no doctor and don't claim to be one but the only thing I can say is that you can always see a doctor and see what they say.

I think you should massage your foot everyday and put ice on it for 10 minutes before you go to sleep.
