I hope I can help a little by sharing the story of what happened to me when my own toenail came off when a friend of mine dropped a large, heavy, metal place on my toe.
It hurt really, really badly for a few days before it finally came off when I was in the shower. It was the first time anything like that had ever happened to me so I was more than a little freaked out to see my toenail floating around.

I was lucky enough to be able to wear sandals for the two or three weeks that it took for my toenail to heal. And until you heal, you will be in serious pain. Sorry to tell you that.

Agh, this thread is great. My left toenail is currently popped up like a soup lid. My son cranked a door against it on Friday. Pretty painful. My dr gave me an antibiotic on Friday and I am going to the Poditrist tomorrow. WIll be interesting based on the info here to see what he does. Probably nothing b/c IMO this particular Podi is a Quack.

Why would you take your child to a doctor who you already believe is a quack?

I JUST ripped my big toenail off on Friday and it hurt! I was getting into my van and I thought I stubbed it pretty good until I looked down to see my nail sticking up 90 degrees....of course I went to the hospital since I have never done that before and they ended up pulling out the nail and sent me on my way with antibiotics and cream to put on it and telling me to wrap it. I also got some open toe sandals so that it could air and not sweat and that has helped alot with being able to walk with out having to worry about putting too much pressure on it.

Obviously I d/n take my kid to the Dr. Not sure where you got that from but try reading harder.

My toe is pretty good. Not stopping me from any mobility and exercise. Just got back from a 3 day music fest and walked miles per day. I clipped off the new growth the other day. Hopefully it grows in right.

Dear Foot Doc I understand that without seeing this might be difficult, but even some general information would help me understand. I also understand that seeing a doctor is best, but being in Vietnam, not that they are not good and professional, I do question medical advise from people that tell you basketball, badminton, and swimming make you taller, and to treat a heat rash you have to boil your clothes.

Anyway to my reason for writing, I was backing my motorbike out a few months ago, and like is common here in Vietnam the security had to have them as packed tight as they could. I wasn’t able to get the stand up, and when I yanked it back the foot of the stand caught under the big toe nail on my left foot, ripping it I would say 99% off. It was still connected a little at the base of the nail, and though it hurt I took it like a man and didn’t even know how bad it was until I felt blood in my sandal a short time later. Had the feeling of shock, but thanks to the Boy Scouts, and my military first aid training, I know and understood what was happening and acted accordingly, though the Vietnamese I was with was flipping out as they are not taught even basic first aid here. So anyway I tried to keep the nail on it as long as I could and managed about 2 months or so, but the other day it was time to give up on the sinking ship so to speak as it was all but totally disconnected, and really only just tucked under the skin in a part, which slid off easily. Now I have this new nail starting to grow, but a little concerned, as this is the first time an entire nail has been ripped off, since the nail bed in the front of the nail is a raised up a little higher than the nail growing. So my concern is really if this might cause an ingrown nail, or if it is normal and the nail will simply push the skin down and grow over it?

ok, so you have totally just scared the 7734 out of me, I had a freak accident where someone ran into my toenail and it was sticking up like a car hood,at a 90 degree angle, I immediately flew to the nearest clinic while bleeding profusly into my 110.00 Birkenstocks, while I waited I took pics, I was surprised at how little pain I had, my BP was 110/82 when they got to me, they numbed it up( now that hurt like a mofo) and since it was only hanging by a small piece-one small yank and it was removed, I have took motrin for pain, but if I didnt already have a hamstring pull I really think I could go w/o it. However, in reading all your posts, my concern is that my toenail might grow in crooked, & what's this about a Fake toenail to Guide the one growing in? some insight would be greatly appreciated, also I haven't had the nerve to unwrap it and look at it today...lol But I must say that Labor Pain and childbirth was multiple times worse, this was and is not unbearable. Slept like a baby all night:)

Today, I hit my big toe on our futon couch. Wow that was painful. My big toenail has almost
completely ripped out. The bleeding is now minimal, and I've been keeping my foot elevated.
I applied ice to keep the swelling down, and took some ibuprophin. I don't think I can go
to work tomorrow, since my job requires me to be on my feet all day. I hope I'm taking
all the right steps. I'll be changing the gause bandage again, and applying antibiotic ointment
    with the next bandage.

that's funny, the exact same thing happened to me, pointy scary nail bit & all XD

i wish he would have given you an answer because that would have really helped me a lot.
based on what i have read i am cleaning it w/alcohol (i'm allergic to hydrogen peroxide) and letting it air out to avoid fungal misfourtion... i also have the neighboring toe taped & covered in gauze to keep it from touching/soiling the hurt toe...
also taking a multi vitamin, a calcium tablet & an extra vitamin C suppliment to hopefully help my imune system prevent infection & grow a new nail...

like most people on here i havn't got any insurance... & my pay is horrible (i'm a live in nanny, so i only make $200 a month) if anything seems to go awry i will head to a minute clinic, but that's $100 i can't afford to spend if i don't have to. if any of what i'm doing currently w/the toe sounds wrong, or anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it.

I ripped off my big toe nail 10 days ago. I having been putting triple antibiotic on it and keeping it wrapped. It is still very painful. It is not infected. Last night it started itching very bad. i just want to know if this is normal in the healing process. Please let me know or is this the sign of an infection?

This has been an interesting thread. Somewhat helpful too. I bruised my toe a few months ago, which was painful, but I have no clue how I did it. Thought nothing of it since it started feeling better. I painted my toe nails a few weeks ago. 3 weeks ago, my big toe started hurting again after a long day on my feet wearing tennis shoes. I took the nail polish off and discovered a white/cream color spot under my nail. I went to my doc the next day since I was heading out of town for a week and didn't want to risk infection. There wasn't one yet, so I was told to watch it. Well, it was very painful and my toe would throb. My son ended up jumping on it full force durning vacation, and I'm not afraid to admit I cried! I called a pediatrist when we got home and just saw him on Friday. My nail wasn't attached fully, so the option was to have him take it off, or have it rip off. Yuck! Choose the give me good pain meds and take it off. I didn't watch and he and my son talked the entire time to me. The gauze he used did stick to it when I had go take off his dressing. Yuck! My toe hurts when soak it in Epsom salt, which I have to do every day. I also apply this healing gel and a bandaide fresh every day. I'm hoping I don't get an infection. One worry is wearing shoes. It is nice out, so I can wear flip flops, but I teach 3 year olds and I usually wear tennis shoes with them. Either way it could hurt! Good luck to those going through the same thing!

    Dear FOOT DOC
I had my toenail ripped off 2 weeks ago. I am un-insured and I went to the ER unto which they proceeded to rip/pull the toenail the rest of the way off saying I broke it just in front of the growth center (BTW I just got the bills today $767 for the ER and $555 for the ER Physician and Physicians assistant{which the assistant was the only one i saw besides a nurse!}). My question is The only AfterCare instructions I got was to put Neosporin +pain and wrap w/ gauze and tape (I was also given one of those foam positioner things that has a bendable metal bar in it to put over my toe to keep blankets from putting pressure on the nail bed when I sleep) and to see a Podiatrist (which With those two bills I'm already going to be a year or more to pay those down, and I know a specialist is going to cost a boo-coo more) Should I be Airing it out more or even putting my foot in water (which I have not done) or cleaning it more?

All I have been doing is keeping it wrapped up w/ neosporin on it and when I change the 'bandage' I wipe it as clean as I possibly can (because putting pressure on the nail bed is painful). Then I re-apply the neosporin and tape on a fresh bandage.

Thank you for your time and consideration in advanced

FWIW, I ripped my toenail off on the edge of a storm door several years ago. (I was wearing flipflops and was hurrying to get back inside after picking up the newspaper off my porch, because it was cold.) There was barely any blood, but right after it happened, I almost fainted and had to lie down for a minute. Shock, I guess! Of course, it was winter, so I couldn't wear sandals, and it hurt like the DEVIL wearing a shoe. I put Neosporin on it, wrapped it in gauze and limped around for a week or so. I changed the bandage and remedicated it often. The toenail grew back fine.

When I was a kid, I stubbed my toe really hard on a cement block at the pool, and a few days later my toenail turned black and fell off. It grew back fine, too.

Apparently, I am hard on my toenails.

ATTN FOOT DOC: Two nights ago i stubbed my toe nail on the bottom end of my bed and it came straight up at me, still connected at the cutical though. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to a foot dr or just cut it off myself so I didn't mess with it. Later that night my boyfriend accidentally stepped on it with his shoes on and it ripped it completely off. I had to sit down because I was about to faint. Although it didn't hurt that bad, because I've had both of my big toe nails off due to accidents. This toe is the little one right next to my big toe. It doesn't really hurt but I try not to put any pressure on it. I've been keeping neosporin on it during the day with a band aid and when i get home from work I take it off to let it breathe and don't put anything else on it til the next morning. When I lost one of my big toe nails the foot dr gave me some sheep wool and tape to wrap it up with, I had to soak in water and epsom salt for 15 mins twice a day. I don't have insurance anymore so I really can't afford to go to the dr and get an opinion or anything. I've read on the internet that I don't need to soak it to keep it dry, then other forums say to. I'm not sure what I should do! What do I need to do to care for it??

Well yesterday about noon I was outside with one of my mares(for those who may not know a mare is a female horse), cleaning out her hooves. After cleaning her hind foot out i went to set her foot back down without thinking about my own foot being in the way ( and yes i was in flip flops, I had just woke up and didn't bother with boots) when she stomped her foot on mine I ripped off my ENTIRE toenail, it was barely hanging by a tiny piece of skin, so my boyfriend carried me in the house until everyone got around to take me to the ER. Once i got there they numbed to toe (which hurt worse then ripping the nail off itself) and the doctor cut the piece of skin and sent me home all bandaged up. I clean it several times a day and let it get air also. I was wondering about how long will it take for a new nail to begin to grow?

    Hey FootDoc,
I work as a horse shoer and on Monday a horse I was working on reared up and slammed right down on my foot. I felt a wet sensation and realized the horse did more than just bruised my foot. I proceeded to take off my shoe and saw my black sock was dark red. I took the sock off and my big toe looked like it had blown up and the 2 next to it were also damaged but not as severely as the big toe. I went to put my sock back on and noticed the nail wiggled like a loose tooth. I than decided to go to the ER, they cleaned the toe, blocked the nerve, wedged the nail back in place, trimmed the excess tissue (torn cuticle) and wrapped it.
This happened on Monday, now 4 days later I went for a doctor ordered recheck for signs of infection/ healing progress and he said its fine to go back to work but to tape the nail down.
Finally my question for you; I have been wrapping the foot in a bag in the shower but am not sure if necessary. What do you suggest? Thanks
