I cannot believe you all have the same problem, it feels good sharing and know I'm not alone with my ordeal. I was beginning to think there was something seriously wrong with my feet, the itch mostly acurres on my left foot the sometimes bounces to my right. The itch is within and feels like something is in there? I am a 29 year old female if that makes a difference? Thanks for posting everybody, I will all your sugestions ane hopefully they work, and good luck to you all with this problem!

  2. Please contact me if the following helps. I have what I believe is the same problem, and have absolutely no idea what causes it. It is crazy, insane, intense, deep unscratchable itching. It usually lasts about 15-20 minutes. The skin of my foot is 100% normal and healthy. The itching must be neuropathic or psychosomatic.

BUT.........In my own particular case, I have found a source of instant relief (though not a permanent cure). Take an electrical vibrator (massager, sexual, or therapeutic, any type will work) and press it into the sole of your foot on full power. The vibrations seem to crowd the nerves with so much information that they stop sending the erroneous "itchy" signals and the itching stops.

Please try this and let me know if it works for you.

I was quite surprised to find this topic so easily. I never dreamed that this was such a wide-spread issue that there would be this much discussion!

I am a 61 year old male in excellent health and good physical shape with no (or very few anyway) previous health issues. My itching began this past summer and I first noticed it returning from a vacation trip to visit family in MN in July. I drove out and back as usual and on the way home I noticed the itching on my right arch. I was using the cruise control (on a very non-busy rural Interstate) so I removed my shoe and began scratching my arch with my foot resting on my left knee and I can't begin to describe how GOOD that felt! But like many of you, I scratched my foot raw. Then it went away. But it came back again, and this time on the left side! And the same thing, unbelievable sensation from the scratching. This has continued all fall on and off, with random sides (left and right). It has not interrupted my sleep but I have woken up to urinate and discovered the itching when I came back to bed. But after a good scratch (and by the way a stiff hair brush is an excellent tool) I went right back to sleep. I also do remember an occasional itchy palm in years past as some have described but I haven't experienced that for some time now.

At first I attributed this to dry skin, but the skin on my feet was far from dry, especially this past summer. I have used skin cream after showering to reduce the chance of having dry skin, but the itching will still show up. As a matter of fact, I had a good scratch session on EACH foot a couple hours ago and they are fine now. I have not experienced the pain that many have mentioned here and for that I am very grateful.

As a note of interest, I had experienced some severe stress this past winter and spring and the mention of stress as a cause is intriguing. Back in June I did have a very odd experience with vertigo for about three weeks. It came on suddenly and I thought I was having a stroke. After a visit to the ER and multiple tests (including an MRI) there was no evidence of any such thing as a stroke. After three more bouts of vertigo (including severe dizziness and vomiting) I visited an ENT doctor and after a couple hours of testing and scoping she told me it was likely brought on by stress since there were no visible signs of any issues. A couple weeks after that I went on vacation and it has not returned. But that's when the itching started. Now I wonder if they are somehow related?

Nothing else has really changed that I can think of. No new carpeting, no pets, no change in diet, no change in laundry detergent or bath soap or shampoo. No new shoes, socks, underwear, or bedding. I really can't think of any external change that could have prompted this.

As I mentioned, my case is somewhat annoying but not (yet) painful. I'm actually more than mildly amused at the satisfying sensation that the scratching provides. Like scratching a dog behind the ears. Definitely interested to hear about any other experiences. It sure seems odd that we all have such similar symptoms and they are admittedly somewhat unusual. I might add that I am extremely ticklish on the bottoms of my feet and so that may well explain the pleasurable sensations from the scratching. Perhaps the combination of satisfaction (scratching where it itches) and eroticism (tickling) are working together, who knows?

In any case, I am very curious what sort of stimulus is causing this. Any further insights and comments are certainly welcome.

This is strange indeed to find so many others with this same condition. I too have had ichy arches, mostly at night for a few months now. This has definitely interrupted my sleeping and makes me worried as my mom suffers from neuropathy on both of her feet. I pray this is not the beginning of anything related. I am a female in my late 50's with a good diet and healthy lifestyle, so it just came on very sudden. One thing I have found that temporarily releaves ich is stretching my foot and arch upward as I stretch, somehow the itching subsides. No long term relief though. I also have a high instep, arches that need support. Maybe they are falling?

Im a 40 year old man in south of Sweden. No big changes in food (maby less red-meat, still eat fish, egg and sometimes sea-food.)
My problems started I guess three or four years ago. Long time stress that I guess together with alcohol is not such a good combo. I think it started way back but gotten worse the last 3 years. Dont know any longer. Now I have a red circle and its like dry skin that could pe "peeled off" when scratching. Very interesting to see its in most frequent right arc. I have mistaken for bad socks, shoes etc. but it seems now it might be stress related. (neurologiacal more than toxics or an dermatology issue).

I have noticed its getting worse when feet are humed or using for example ski boots and when scratching it seems to get worse, (I should Im less stressed when on vacation, skiing, thats why i dont know if I think its all about stress).
I have had some Dr. in general practice (medicine) look at it, but no further investigation is done by any specialist on dermatology.

Any one of you got the sensation 3-4 days with regularity each month or is it irregular times?
If anyone would like to keep me updated on my mail marten@activists.se its very appreciated!

I have the intense itching on the arch of my left foot. It began about a month ago. There is no surface redness or swelling. Just a deep itchy sensation. I am a female, age 36. I have no known food allergies. I have bad allergies to pet dander, dust mites, several trees and grasses. I get allergy shots and take medication daily. I didn't realize how many other people are having the same problem with their arches itching. I hope to find a solution soon.

I had the rings that you mentioned as well, just in more locations. Check your soaps, laundry detergents, lotions, etc. I found that once I switched to clear and free versions of these agents that my rings and itching disappear.

I still have itching on my arches, but not much redness. For this, I currently use pumice stone (in moderation) while showering, then applying lotion before work.

I am 30 years old and have been struggling with itchy arches for as long as I can remember. I wish there was something to get rid of it permanently!

This seems very strange... I too have had a deep, almost painful itch on the arch of the right foot, with no surface symptoms whatsoever. I just now rubbed it with tea tree oil, thinking it might be a tiny fungus of some kind... I'll post again if that helps.
I too looked at reflexology charts, and in my case, it might be related to a bad flare-up of acid reflux that has been bothering me for 6 weeks or so. But the itching started only 3 days ago.
I also wonder if it's something to do with nerves... a kind of shingles?

Tea Tree Oil worked for me, at least the itching has been gone for over a week. Every time it bothered me, I rubbed tea tree oil on it over the course of the 5 or 6 days because it immediately soothed the itching, and I noticed yesterday that I haven't even thought about it for over a week. So in my case, I suspect it was a fungus.

    Good luck everyone!

I have the same thing, just started a month ago. I thought it was ring worm at first as I had a pet that got it over the summer but the meds for it doesn't help and it's not red so back to the drawing board. I'll try the vinegar and see if that helps. I put ice in a sandwich bag and it seems to help relief or get my mind off of it! I'm 58 and also have plantar fasciitis but not sure if that is related to the itching. I wear good shoes, birkenstocks, danskos, earth shoes. I'm just glad I'm not alone. Maybe one of us can find a solution.

WOW My daughter who is 10 years old has been complaining of this now for 2 weeks. She says she is fine at school, it starts when she takes her shoes off then goes away and wakes her up in the middle of the night. It is both of her feet more the right than the left. Her feet look fine, there is no redness or bumps, nothing just itches her to death. We have tried anti itch cream and antifungal but neither seems to help. I wondered if it was her arches not having the proper support but she has great shoes with arch support. Will try the tea tree oil hopefully it will help. she is a healthy 10 year old, no stress, she does have hot sweaty feet but we keep her feet and socks clean. HELP!

I have had this for years.....feels more internal. I have found heat rocks help. Drives me crazy though.

  15. I have suffered with severe itching for two or three years. Mostly at night and in both feet. I have been to a dermatologist and he prescribed soaking in warm water and plain table salt. This seem to help a little but i bought a product from Dr Leonard and it is called "Archeaser". Everytime i feel my feet starting to itch even after i have gone to bed, i get up and slide my feet into these archeasers and i can go to sleep without waking up. Sometime, when i have gone to sleep and the itch come on, i will have to get up and soak my feet in warm salty water then place the archeasers on my feet and usally i can go to sleep. My next step is to see a neuroligist. I just might have nerve problems

  16. Re: uncontrolled itching in arch of right foot

I am a 54 year old woman who is on a 10 day menstrual cycle. I do suffer from I B S symptoms and about a week ago my right arch began to itch. First, however, an itch on my left shin on my leg began after I had sat on park grass. It seems I have always been allergic to the chemicals used in park grass as I have always had a reaction of itching after sitting or standing on it. I will try some of the remedies. The itch in my right arch of my foot remains, all other itching has gone away. Bless you All for putting up with this.

  17. Re: uncontrolled itching in arch of foot / tea tree oil cure?

Be careful with tea tree oil. It is strong stuff. My daughter was using it on her scalp for itching and began getting a type of psoriasis. Once I found a brush that had been lying in a spilled puddle of tea tree oil and when I went to wash it off found that part of the plastic brush was eaten away by the tea tree oil.

Me too, for several years. My first episode was following an exposure to shower cleaning spray (in there barefoot to scrub). It also affects my palms occasionally. Remember that allergies are developed; just because you use the same soap or shoes for years doesn't mean that it can't become the cause. I have to change shampoo about every six months due to sensitivities that develop over time, so do get the allergy testing.

I had my first experience a month ago with my left arch itching while I slept, it woke me and I scratched it. After my second episode I found this sight and would like to say scratching it is not working. I suggest resisting the desire to scratch and get a natural dry brush (can be purchased in health food or bed and bath stores), I gently rubbed it over the arch and up the inside of my leg. This is good for circulation and I suggest you do it all over foot and up sides of leg. Always brush toward the heart. Next suggestion is crazy but it is working, turn your vacuum sweeper on and place nozzle on arch. I was vacuuming and it came to me to place nozzle on my arch. It is working so far. Don't have a logical reason for it, but I feel stress is the cause. I believe that the majority of our nerve endings are in our hands and feet. And the extreme stress we mentally inflict upon ourselves is affecting our nerves to the point of overload, and possibly our arches must be our weakest link. Be gentle with yourselves and gently rub your arch when it starts rather than attack your foot. From all the posts I've read here the scratching gets more violent, I suggest reversing your brain impulse to scratch with positive reinforcement by being gentle to your arch. Have the dry brush by your bed, when it starts gently rub over arch and up the leg. The brush gently scratches it but relieves it. Also during the day when I can I rub in a circular motion on the arch with my hand or other foot, and it feels good. I suggest trying to relax and comfort the arch during the day and it might let it rest at night. I think the dry brushing of legs might help with restless legs as it helps circulation, can't hurt. Dry brushing before showering removes dry skin and aids in circulation and cellulite reduction. I hope this helps someone. So far so good for me. Good luck! Let me know if it helps.

I broke my right ankle in Jan of 2013. The itching is in my arch of the same foot that I broke. It's a very deep itch and it only started after my ankle was fully healed. They had to cut open my ankle and insert a steel rod and 6 screws. I was wondering if it might be nerve damage from the surgery or something else entirely? Doctor said my liver and stuff is normal, so just ruling that out immediately. Tired of it itching though! PLEASE HELP!
