I've been having a sharp shooting pain in my right and left big toes, like pins poking in my toes, from the nail to the first toe joint. I have no swelling, no redness. I have diabetes, sugar level of 130 in the mornings. In my young days I used to wear high heels, but I have been wearing open toe shoes. I have pain mostly in bed during the night. During the day, I have little tingling sensations. I arrange the bedding so that my toes are not touching the bedding. I tried Gabapentin 100mg twice a day for last 2 wks. It helps just a little bit, but I still have shooting pain. I take over-the-counter Neurotone once a day, but taking twice a day works better. Taking 2 tablets of CVS Extra Strength Pain Relief PM ( acetaminophen + diphenhydramine HCL ) helps me sleep through the night. Doctor gave me a B12 shot, and it worked for a little while. I drink coffee, have dry mouth, in my 80's. I do not each much meat. I take B vitamins, but I don't think I take enough B12 as I should. I took a blood test to check the amount of B in my blood, and it did not show that I was deficient. But I do not remember how my toes felt back then. My big toe nails are long, humped, and narrow... I like trimming my toe nails to be somewhat pointy at the ends, not flat across. I don't know if I am getting a slight ingrown toe nail as the nail might be becoming deformed and putting pressure back at the base of the nail. I will try cutting my nails as much as I can.

  3. I finally had my toe nails trimmed last night. At least 1/4" was trimmed from both big toe nails. It took an hour to cut using a heavy duty nail trimmer. The part of the nail that was cut was not attached to the nail bed. The nails are thick and yellow, and there might be some fungus growth. This morning, the pain in my toes has diminished significantly. Hopefully, the pain stays away!

I just started having shooting pain in the outside 2 and 3 toes--doesn't hurt my big toe or second toe at all.
I do have it off and on in both feet but mainly on the left side.

my back ground is past nerve damage and broken back, surgery to repair that over 7 years ago...I also have suffered from migraine headaches for years.

I am going to try the B12 since I also have restless legs at night. I will keep you posted please do the same on what works for you

  5. The pain in my big toes started up again. I had my toe nails trimmed once again. This time at least 50% of my toenail was cut back. Only 1/4 inch of nail remains on my big toes. The portion that was cut back was not attached to the nail bed. Fungus had gotten underneath the toenail. I used to put toenail polish on my toenails. I don't anymore because the nail polish keeps the moisture under the toenail and encourages fungus growth. I continue to put Vicks on my toenails in the morning and evening. The Vicks softens the nails, and hopefully kills the fungus. The pain in my toes have gone away once again.

But the pain comes so fast and hurts so much, then is gone, only to recurr minutes later. I couldn't sleep all night! I have diabetic neuropathy, but this is different and the pain is severe! Help!!!

    Ohhhhhh the pain

I have had this for years now.I know I don't have nerve damage...there cant be all of us with nerve damage!
When I was ten I got my first lighting pain in my mid toe....I screamed, it was like a hammer smashed it...next thing I knew, I was looking up at my family. I had passed out. No doctor has ever figured it out. My son just told me this week that when a person is startled with such quick intense pain, it can cause them to faint. Took me almost 30 years to find that out!
Anyhow, after years of trying to discribe this lightning pain, it hit my big toe five times in secession. That's when I realized exactly what it felt like. I used to have this adorable but nasty black pomerian. He liked to bit when you would take his bone, etc.... my dad even nick named him saten!
Ahh Has.... it was five visious quick bites. That is exactly my pain....and yes, it does
Make you scream. I wish my hubby could understand this is not drama on my part!
** Has anyone wondered if maybe this is something new? As it stands now, we are all over the net...but no real answers....and there must be millions of us out there with this. I believe the fastest answers will come when we find a few doctors with the same pains....then maybe there will be answers and cures for this.
Hem...maybe I should search something like that!
Good luck to all....I hope we all are pain free tonight.
p/s Lyrica did nothing for mine.....not even after months.

My chiropractor told me the toes pain comes from nerve in back. I've had it now for 6 mos. Starts when I lay down to sleep and has gotten worse lately. Mainly in the 4 small toes. It's in the whole toes not just the tips. I suppose I need to get a nerve conduction test done but doubt there is any cure for it other then back surgery. I'm 69 and have had low back problems for years but haven't wanted to do surgery cause it might not work either or make my back worse. I go to chiropractor 2 times a week for adjustment only. He told me those roller beds was a waste of time for my condition. When the back hurts I ice it down.

I have been having very sharp pain in my left big toe. It isnt everyday and its been happening for about 6 months. The pain is a shooting pain and it radiates through my whole toe. It can last just a few minutes or like right now, it has been going on for two hours. I don't know what it is but it is scary. I am only 18 years old and my mom told me gout is typically found in old people. If it makes any difference, I am female. If anyone knows what it could be, please let me know.

Yes all this is very interesting as noone really has any concrete answers.Ive had this pain in the toe next to big one on left foot started over 3 years ago and was intermittant for first couple years just dealt with it as it would come and go for long periods but when it did was very painful and symptoms are just like all here are saying. 2 years ago had an xray that showed nothing,Now in the last 6mths the pain is nearly always their when mobile not in bed at night. So i went to a podiatrist he tryed a couple different things that didnt work so he sends me to imagery for a ultrasound to hopefully get a diagnosis,That was today i thought that it was Mortens Nueroma but it wasnt and there was no sign of arthritis etc.It is very frustrating trying to get a diagnosis, ive now had orthotics made and will try that with descent shoes and have an appointment next Feb with a foot specialist to try and get some answrers and if i do i will report back.

There sure are a lot of people throwing out a lot of crap just to see what sticks. I was diagnosed with gout 4 years ago. The symptoms you are having are part of what I live with every day. Will just be laying in bed and suddenly it feels like someone stuck a hot ice pick into a toe. I would bet a healthy sum that if you went and had it tested, that your uric acid levels are too high.

I have sharp biting tip of toe pain. Its sudden and i catch my breath. Some times it feels like some one touched jumper cables to the toes. Its on my left also im 43. I have too many ailments to discuss. I dont wear tight shoes or high heals.ive had these sharp unexpected sort lived pains for a couple of years. I dont drink booze or coffe or pop. I dont smoke. Or do drugs. Im pretty square in my life style. Today while watching a Corrie Tenboom movie it happened. And i just looked at as if there was an inisible something gnawing on mytoes!!! I suppose i should take B12 to see if im deficient... im pretty skeptical about it though.

just the other night i had the sharp shooting pain in my right big toe. I woke up at about 3 in the morning from this extremeley painful shock. At first I thought I got stung by a bee or something. I turned on the light to see and there was no bumps or any difference in looks with my toe. I am so young, middle school, and we are learning about nerves and there is definently some connection between blood circulation and a damaged nerve. If you have noticed that your feet fall asleep super fast. If anyon knows something about this please tell me

  16. You went and ticked off somebody into witch craft. They made a Voodoo doll of you and are sticking pins in the toes to be awnry.Same thing happened to me,except this guy was sticking the pins in the dolls lower back too.I found out who it was and made a Voodoo doll of him and stuck a pin in it's brain.Problem solved! :)

I have been taking Vit B12 daily for a long time. My doctor even sent me to another doctor for a nerve test on my feet and I passed that ok. I have had these sharp shooting pains in my toes for the last week or so. The pain is intense but it lasts just seconds. It happens when I am up and around and when I'm sleeping, the pain does not discriminate.

I do not wear high heels or tight shoes. I do have herniated and bulging disks so I wonder if it is some nerve damage from that. I have never had a migraine. I also have pain in the ball of my foot but I've had that for some time and didn't think it had anything to do with the new pain. The ball of the foot feels like its on fire. Also feels like its swollen in that area.
My toe pain is the big toe and next 2 toes and recently the other big toe. Never the little toes.
I was surprised to see so many people posting this same problem, from young to old. If anyone knows what this condition is, please let us know! TY

Last night I also experienced very sharp piercing pain in my big toe right beneath the nail. It lasted a couple of hours, but after taking motrin, it subsided. I'm hoping it never returns. The pain was like an electrical "zinger" at times.

my husband is going through this. The third dr we have seen diagnosed him with tarsal tunnel and morton neuroma. You may want to find a foot and ankle specialist. good luck!

I have had this problem once in a while for many years and thought nothing of it until yesterday, when I was in the middle of an exercise class (in the middle of a "downward dog" yoga pose), when the pain hit my 4th toe like a bolt of lightning. The pain has recurred with regularity for over 24 hours now, mostly when I put weight on my foot, and it's driving me crazy! I wonder if I did some nerve damage while exercising barefoot.
