I too think that it is related to muscular, in my case it is muscle spasticity (feels as though your muscles are constantly in use even when you aren't doing anything). For me triggers for the 'string around the toe' or 'bandaged toe' (mine is the right big toe but I've had it in both before and my finger) is usually stress and generally when I am feeling run down and fatigued. I have it now, mine comes and goes and sometimes (lol you'll think I am crasy) I'll feel it all of a sudden if I think about the symptom..and as quickly as it came it can go if I stop thinking/obsessing over it. I've learnt over the years the mind is a very powerful thing we've all heard the saying 'mind over matter'. I know it is muscle spasticity as I have MS and muscle spasticity is a symptom of MY MS... (every person with MS has their own unique symptoms). I've often had my husband give me a good massage from my big toe all the way up the leg as far as the top of the thigh. Starting at the big toe. Pay attention to the bone or muscle or what ever it is that you see when you flex the toe up and the same that you can feel behind the knee and running up to the hip try to relax it. I find instant relief after this massage. Give it a try. If it doesn't work at least you have relaxed a little. Try some stress management, it can also be for me - poor sleep, cold/hot weather and lack of exercise and sitting for long periods could be affecting you also. I understand greatly having MS myself that symptoms can be caused by a lot of different illnesses/ailments. I am not saying this is what is wrong with you but its an insight to how and when it affects me. As I said I get this feeling in my index finger also. The feeling in my finger and my toe both feel as though the finger/toe is being pulled up (as if stretching the muscle out). My worst stages of this is when I am in the middle of an MS attack the muscle fatigue is incredible and incredibly immobilising... seeming like I've done a workout some days when I have done nothing at all. But always the one symptom that always appears when I have spasticity is the string around the toe pulling it up in the air.. I was first diagnosed with MS when I was 27 but did a lot of research on the internet and basically self diagnosed myself with MS when I was 23 (I am 31 now) after having a few flu injections (starting 2002) which I thought caused numbness/pins and needles sensations(something I had never experienced in my whole life it was in my stomach and back and down one side of the body). the 1st injection the symptom I dismissed as the doctor put it down to a virus in the system I didn't want to think it could be anything worse and believed him (there certainly was a virus in my system - the flu injection and this is why I had flare ups - flare ups are often caused by a virus) and after a few weeks it passed although at that point I did research on the flu injection and found links to guillian barre virus but thought it was way to severe(these days they are linking MS to guillian barre virus). the second injection I again experienced the symptoms I thought hang on there is a link here not long after is then when I sought neuro specialist advice and in 2007 after MRI, CT scan, neuro tests and a weird ass TV show/eye test and a lumbar puncture I found out I had the same markers on my genes or whatever that diagnosed me with MS. I am not saying you have MS!! But what I have learnt over the years and I guess the point I am trying to get across is to listen to your body and your symptoms they are trying to tell you things become more atune with how your body works at what time the symptoms are there and what has changed in your life if they come and go and read more about your body, it doesn't help to be come more educated about our health we'll live longer! I know that people in the past have said don't go diagnosing yourself but hang on if doctors are telling you there is nothing wrong and you god damn well know that something IS wrong then its up to you (yes?) to investigate, to manage your body and your health and become aware. Only a specialist of whom you have spent the big bucks on to invest time into your case to work out your ailment will get to the bottom of things although GPs are often pretty inciteful they are generally there to fix a common ailment or prescribe you drugs as lovely as all our GPs are they are just that General and our bodies are damned complicated.

I'm a 32 year old and have had the problem for years, but mine isn't when I wake up. Mostly when I get cold, it feels like a string is tied tightly around several of my toes. I thought it had to do with poor circulation since my hands are almost always cold. But I also have moderate scoliosis and have been to chiropractors, physical therapy, and orthopedic surgeons (no surgery, but wore a back brace for three years around ages 11-14). Now I wonder if it's all related to nerves around the spine. hmmm....

I found this article and it's spot on except that my big tow actually hurts bad. From what you describe Id' be surprised you don't have pain by now. I'm actually looking for non pain relief as I don't personally believe in taking pain meds. Does anybody actually know what this toe is suffering from and what I can do about the tied painful feeling? It's like a knot is tired around the joint making it sleepy, painful, and tingling. tia

I am assuming this strange feeling of having a "string tied around" one or several of your toes is due to the amount of sugar we are eating and/or caffeine intake?

I only say this because of all the threads/forums I have read - it seems related. (Toe numbness and sugar/caffeine intake)

My pinky toe has been feeling like it has something "tied around" pretty tight although nothing is there. Coincidentally, I have been consuming ALOT of caffeine AND sugar the past couple weeks.

I read another persons post that once they stopped indulging in those two things - their "mystery toe string" went away! Worth a try!

Meanwhile, I got a little chuckle at everyone commenting on how it's unbelievable we all found this thread! "An invisible string tied around my toe" is a phrase most people take as a crazy comment! :)

My dad & I both have something called Raynauds disease that makes your toes and or fingers, numb, tingle, turn white become painful, and it can happen at any hour of the day. It does feel like a string is wrapped around the toe. To relieve the discomfort I massage the numb toe with heavy pressure and it helps the blood circulate back in which relieves the irritation.

OMG I have been feeling this now for over a month and stand on my feet for work EVERY day all day long. But, after reading this thread (no pun intended) I figured it out! It's Joplin's syndrome:

    "Joplin's Neuroma
A Joplin’s neuroma is an entrapment of the nerve traveling along the bottom and inside area of the big toe. The common medical terminology used to define a Joplin’s neuroma is perineural fibrosis of the plantar proper digital nerve to the hallux. The pain is similar to a Morton's neuroma, but only involves the inside of the big toe. The pain can be sharp, burning, shooting, electrical, tingling or numbing. A thin “cord” can sometimes be felt and may even roll when pressure is applied. A Joplin's neuroma is usually caused by abnormal pronation (rolling in of the foot) and may also be associated with a bunion. Roll over image to see the common area of pain on the bottom of the great toe"

Get some rigid shoes, nueroma pads, ice it, heat it!

I thought I was the only one having this weird feeling. It's nice to see that I'm not alone. It feels like, when you take your sock off, like there is a string still between my toes. It only happens with my left pinky toe. I can run my hand across the top of my foot and it reacts. I also noticed today that I can touch the back of my calf and now I have the same feeling down my leg going to my toe. I have type 2 diabetes and my levels are good.. I am annoyed by this more than anything else.

    annoyed and stumped

The internet is amazing, really. I've had this for a few weeks - the first time I felt it, I actually had a hair on my foot. And then I thought it was phantom. I have no other symptoms or related issues, but I just thought it was strange. Thanks for the reassurance and the information, everyone. Aloha!

it may be mercury in your body causing nerve damage. After several visits to docs and even a referral to neurologist at Mayo Clinic, thats all I can come up with. MS has been considered as a possibility but Never diagnosed. Good luck everyone! And if you find an answer please let the rest of us know........

My 8-year old child started complaining today saying that her big toe felt like it had an elastic wrapped around it. I post this only because perhaps a doctor is looking into this and if looking for similarities in the posts might want to note that a healthy, athletic, 8 year-old is claiming the exact same symptoms. I told her to stretch out her toes (like she does in gymnastics) and/or put on an ice pack (basically blowing her off since I figured it was nothing). She was consistent in this complaint all day so I just figured I'd type in a search. Good luck to everyone!

I, too, have the problem. I feel like a rubber band is pulling down on BOTH my big toes. I had osteomyelitis 4 yrs. ago. My spine collapsed and I had a laminectomy/discectomy to repair the spinal problems. Nerve damage was already done. In Dec2011 I had a pain stimulator installed. The neurosurgeon & orthopaedist both knew of the problem in my feet, I have never been answered as to the cause. I went to a podiatrist who did x-rays and could not explain it. Since the installation of my pain stim. the pain is more noticeable in my toes because the pain in my legs is controlled. So, I have seen doctors and still have no answer. I notice that the doctor here really doesnt reply after his first comment to see a doctor & then to chastise someone who hadnt gone to the doctor. I have gone to all types of doctors & still have no answer. I wish just one would be honest and say we just dont know or we know the problem and nothing can be done.

A couple of months after foot surgery (which had nothing to do with toes or bunions), I had the sensation that a thread/yarn was wrapped around my big toe. I immediately took off my shoe and sock to untangle my poor toe - only to find that there was nothing there. Since there was no numbness, my doctor had no clue of what the problem might be. Did the acupuncturist or chiropractor help anyone?

I've had same problem most my life.I'm 42 now,and was a skateboardest and from falling down, and over use I have a bump on my knee ,under knee cap. Thus my big right tow is always numb, also off and on I get that string feeling around right ring toewhen I wake from sleeping .so I believe its due to inflamed joints or old injury with built up scar tissue making circulation poor resulting in numbness?still the best is to rest your feet often ,soak in Epson salts ,get off if on all day. .

Wow. I am not alone. Have had symptoms from prior threads for two days.
The difference being that the circumvention string like constriction is highly visible as
A dark ring 360 degrees around my second toe to the big toe on my left foot. I am seeing a DPM today and I will endeavor to upload a photo to the thread or you can email me ssdc.admin@gmail.com I will also try to discuss the symptoms you all have expressed. Perhaps I will com away with a differential diagnosis or at least an action plan. FYI I am an obese 60 yr male with generally good health. I researched the Web and if I was
An infant the diagnosis would likely be ACRS acquired constriction ring syndrome. Has anyone else considered this.

It is not easy by day to distinguish the entrance to the bay when approaching from the northwest. However the monastery on the peak of the peninsula is conspicuous. The harbour is situated on the western side of the bay and protected by a quay running north south.

Choosing your prom dress is about more than just pointing at a picture in a magazine. Remember that your dress must suit not only your personality; it must also suit your body shape and figure. Your prom gown should be age appropriate as well. It is very important that your prom dress should look attractive and feel comfortable. Thus, you should not select designs with very loud colors. For instance, if you are wearing black, it would not have prints of pink colored flowers right in the middle.

Wherever you get married you will want to remember your special day in years to come, so it's important to decide upon photo's and video. Will you have a professional photographer or will one of your guests act as photographer on the day? Will the person performing the wedding allow videos or photos to be taken during the ceremony? If you are having an official photograppher it's a good idea to use recommendations from friends or family and ask to see their photos. You need to find a photographer in your price range that will take the kind of photos you want, maybe you would like a modern reportage style album, or maybe you would like a more traditionally posed album.

toes numb feels tied with string

This started about 3 yaes ago for me after the birth of my first child. I've had MRI of my back neck and brain
Also had a nerve path study done and been to a chiropractor. Since .y mom has ms. We wanted to rule it out. This is probably why I was able to get so many studies done. No diagnosis. The nerves
    Didn't follow a spec path.

Sometimes the bottom of a couple toes are knumb. Sometimes the top of my foot.
Almost always effects my left foot in some way. Yesterday it felt like a stri g was wrapped around 3middle toes again when I woke up. I also have had great days when there is no odd feelings.

I carry some weight in my stomach after childbirth. Maybe weight loss will help. 2013 is the yr of me!

Afanara at yahoo dot com. Please email me if anyone may know what this problem is. I'm an active overweight mom. But very healthly. No heart or sugar issues.
