Wow. I have found the wrong site! What a miserable doc. If none of you like the doc, let's all go find a more agreeable site with a kinder doc.

Hi, I am getting very nervous about my foot surgery next week. I am having a mortons nueroma removed as well as a bunionectomy with a couple of osteotomies... I am worried about the pre-op pain and what medication I will require for the first week or so. Due to my job I have been told I will have 6 weeks elevated no weight bearing and then 6 weeks in a walking cast and then 4 weeks rehab. What medication is usually prescribed after a surgery like this, I know I will be given a pain pump post-op while I am in the hospital for 3 days but my GP has only given me Emtec one pill every 6 hours? This does not sound like it will even touch the pain. I will discuss with my surgeon on Monday but want to know what the most commom pain killer is used with this procedure with the exterior fixation appliance?

    Thanks for your time...

I assume that you are not in the U.S. (possibly Canada), as Emtec, which is the same as Tylenol with codeine is used there. Also, if you were a U.S. patient, unless you have some very severe general medical issues, a surgery such as you have described would surely be done as an out-patient.

Pain is a totally individual thing, and one person's excruciating pain may be another's mere annoyance. I generally prescribe an NSAID to be started the day before surgery and continued post-operatively for several days whether or not there is pain if I don't feel that bleeding or GI problems will be an issue and Demerol 50 mg to be taken every 4 to 6 hours only if needed post-operatively other than for the first dose at bedtime on the evening after surgery, as the foot should still be numb. Most patients continue to take the Demerol for no more than a couple to three days, but as I mentioned, pain is individual to each patient, and medication is available for the purpose of keeping a patient reasonably comfortable. I have no idea why your GP would be prescribing post-operative medications instead of your surgeon. I think you should discuss your concerns directly with that surgeon. If you consider him/her sufficiently trustworthy to perform surgery upon your body, he/she should also be trusted to keep you comfortable.

From what you have said, it appears to me that you have not adequately discussed the important details of your surgery with your surgeon, and I would highly recommend that you do so at a time sufficiently prior to your procedure so that you will be adequately prepared and know what to expect. That should address many, if not all, of your concerns. It's YOUR foot and you need to know NOW, not after your surgery when it may be too late. A question answered on a forum by those who do not know you or the particulars of your case is not an adequate replacement for information which is best given by the doctor who will be responsible for your care.

Thank-you for your answer, yes I am in Canada. I planned on speaking with my surgeon before surgery to get all the answers I need but was curious what medication was commonly used for this type of surgery. My GP gave me some pain medication beforehand as my surgeon is out of town.

    Hi Dr. Foot Note

I wanted to know how successful is the bunion surgery for a person aged around 15 and what are the possible side effects of the surgery

Just so you know, podiatrist specialist in BC Canada do not prescribe the medication. The GP does.... I have discussed all this with my surgeon and I did need my prescription from my GP just as I did. The same with hospitilization requirements are different here in Canada if you are seeing a specialist privately the post-op care is individualized and hospitalization is 4 days for the procedure I am having. Obviously you are not familiar the way things are done here in Canada. Now you know...

That sounds crazy to me. How can a surgeon do his job if he cannot prescribe the drugs needed for pain and infection and everything else that might happen after surgery without having someone else write the prescription for him? I sure wouldn't want to be operated on by someone who cannot offer me the full medical services that are often need. It would be like a carpenter who could hammer in nails but would need to call on someone else if one got bent and had to be taken out.

I agree, it is crazy but that is the way all the Podiatrist Surgeons in Vancouver do it???

I don't know why, they can write prescriptions but they send you to the GP to get them?

I had surgery on my left foot august 19th, and then the same procedure again on the right foot on sept.16. I had bunion removal, as well as a screw/pin inserted, and a toe broke and reset. Today is sept. 28th, and I still have pain in my foot from the august surgery, is that normal??? how long can I expect to have pain??? My doctor; Raymond Stolarski DPM, FACFAS, out of Cincinnati, Ohiohas, in my opinion, has a horrible bedside manner. I have to literally pry information out of him, i ask the nurse, and she makes excuses for the doctor. I feel this is horrible that I have to resort to the internet for answers, don't you agree. I am not saying he did a bad job on the surgery performance, but who am I to judge that, I am no specialist..........this can cause doubt in ones eyes......thank you for your assistance..the pain I get is a shart jolt of pain, all of a sudden, about 4 to 5 times, then it goes away. I also have pain from the swelling, and I do understand that type of pain. I also get a excrutiating pain, for about 5 seconds, on and off 3 to 4 times in a row; the pain feels like a tool is being used to squeeze my toe nail down, like a vice grip....that is a screaming pain. I don't take meds, no reason to, its intermittent....thank you for your attention to these questions....

My sister had an operation on her foot a few days ago. She is in a lot of pain. I looked for a forum to find something that would be helpful to tell her for encouragment. I will tell her to stay away from doctors from now on. What beastly creatures!

I want to let the last writer know, however, The type of pain you discribe sounds to me like the nerves are reknitting together. This is good news as you will need the nerves to reknit to have feeling and sensation in the area that was operated on. I know it must hurt to have these pains like phantoms come and go. You will out live the pain if you are lucky or blessed so just thank God that the parts are hooking up correctly.

I am sorry to hear about your pain. I had foot surgery 6 days ago and it was also the worst pain i have ever experienced. what works for me is (percocet 7.5/tylenol 325) 1-2 q4/6h. You need to elevate your legs as much as possible and keep it above the level of your heart. Make sure you still wingle your toes to prevent swelling. Ice on and off 20 min on 20 min off. Some time your anxiety will get you all worked up the nurse basically told me to deep breath. I would be crying to hard and screaming in pain i just counldt take it anymore. However you cant take to much meds due bleeding problems they said. My pain is controlled when my leg is elevated however when i get up to urinate or eat somthing i feel all the blood rush to that area and its starts to hurt like hell i can also feel the rods and pins as if they are pushing threw my skin. I know your feeling they really should have kept you over night in the hospital to control your pain and see what worked for you. i hope your doing better. Ps i got all this information from a faboulous nurse who sat with me threw the pain. I hope i could help you out a little.

I am about to have a 4th metatarsal osteotomy. I am walking on the metatarsal bone on the ball of my foot and have been in pain for several months.
I have seen two doctors that recommended surgery, however I see mixed opinions on recovery. One doc says no weight bearing for 4 weeks to give the bone time to heal. Another doc says some weight bearing after one week. Several posts on the internet seem to back up the first doctors opinion.
Anyone have the surgery or have an opinion?

Wow, I just read this. Is this really a doctor responding in this manor? The patient came for advice and did appear to leave some questions unanswered to this Doctor came to the conclusion that he/she cant believe there are Doctors out here practicing in this manor? All my doctors are very intelligent and have studied hard but I have never heard or felt any of them act like this one responding to this persons question. WOW....Amazing...

    Re: post-foot surgery

I just had my second post op X-Ray and I have a nonunion that grew from the previous X-Ray. This image shows the one of the screws are backing out, so I'm going back in 2 weeks for another X-Ray and the doctor is going to give me a bone growth stimulator. My foot has been feeling like ice from time to time, but I have not had to much pain. Is this normal? Should I be concerned with the recommended treatment? I expected to be back to work in 2 months and now I don't know when to expect to go back.

Since recovering from foot surgery, I have been looking for forums which help others connect and understand the immense pain one might expect following foot surgery. I have to say I was completely shocked by the incredible rude, hurtful, and unintelligent response made by the self named "foot doc"! Appalled as I am, I wanted to lend support to others going through this very painful, difficult time. I am one week out from my bilateral bunion surgery, still having pain, but no where near the intolerable post-open pain I suffered from the first 72hours. Please research prior to surgeries, as I was not informed just how painful the recovery is. That being said, it does get better. I found a great group from the UK that posts helpful information regard this surgery. Best of luck to the fellow foot patients!
