I have a small, raised bump on the top of my middle toe. About once a month it comes to a 'head' and a clear gel like fluid drains from it. I thought it might be a corn but I have not found any information stating that corns contain any fluid. What is it?

It sounds perhaps like a mucoid-filled sac of some sort, perhaps caused by either an external or internal irritant. Although not to exclusion, it is not uncommon that in diabetics and those with atrophic skin that fluid-filled cysts and even purulent pockets are created between the dead keratotic overgrowth of the corn and the living tissue beneath.

I would recommend seeing a podiatrist before it has come to a "head" for observation and drainage in its "virgin" state so that a culturing and/or obtaining of the exudate for microscopic observation if appropriate can be done, and hopefully a specific diagnosis and etiology established. I would not recommend home self-drainage and especially not without adequate aseptic procedures being adhere to.

Hi, if the "little sac" appears at the area of where the joint closest to the nail is, it may well be a myxoid cyst. There seems to be 2 areas of thought about how this type of cyst arises. The first being that due to arthritic changes the joint capsule becomes comprimised and joint fluid seeps out. The second suggests that it is not this at all and that it simply is the more common type of cyst. I have treated a number of these cysts over the years and personally agree with the first theory. Therefore I believe it is important for you to see a Podiatrist to drain the cyst. Success can be but is not always instant and the cyst fills time and again , but I believe it must be drained otherwise it distorts the shape of the nail. It is my understanding that the myxoid cyst has no sinister underlying pathology.

A myxoid cyst would certainly be a consideration. Here are a couple of examples which might help you in a lay identification. But leave a definitive diagnosis up to your podiatrist.

I have had a cut on my big toe that originally I thought was a blister and did not really pay any attention to. AS time went by this thing got worse the wound got deeper and bigger. I treated with triple antboic cream and soaked it in epson salt ....LOng story short 2 months later it still hurts but the wound is closing. I stand all day and still get seapage from the wound. My family DR thought it was a infected corn or cellulitus. He refered to to a Wound unit @ hospital, that DR had me get a MRI to find that there is fluid in my joints. (That should not be there) Now the Wound DR wants me to see a Orthipedic Surgeon...which I cannot get into for a month...Ughhhhh Is there a plan B? What should I expect from the O. Surgeon?

I have a bunion on both feet and one side was protruding out more. I felt it thinking it was a bone and noticed it had some fluid in there. My Dr. sent me for exrays and ultra sound and all he could do was release the presure and abstract the liquid by a needle. The fluid was hard for him to get up the needle and showed it to me. It was a clear thick gel. But later that night I seen it was right back again.
I can only predict that there is a reason your body wants to automatically make this substance. Either for protection or lubrication. Beats me. Looks like I have to go back and have it drained again. It's getting tender again.

Hi. I have one of these bumps on the middle toe of my right foot, it came up this morning. I didn't pop it but since I put shoes and socks on it burst and has been oozing slowly since, the bump keeps coming back. I suffer from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and also Hyperparathyroidism, could either of these conditions be the root of the cause as I have never had anything like this before. I wear specialised shoes to help with the problems I have with my feet and as such, have no problems with footwear being too tight and rubbing so I'm almost 100% its not a blister. Thank you for reading and for your replies in advance.

I've had these "bumps" on my left and right middle toes for the last 3 years. in that time, I've self drained them maybe 3 times when the bump appears to reach the front of the toenail. All of the post I've read all day that the bump always fills again and again. did anyone come to permanent solution yet?

    Subungual Myoxoid Cyst

I've had many injuries to the distal joint of my thumbs and forefingers (and other digits occasionally). To protect the joint from further damage I wrap the affected finger with 1" 3M Coban(TM) stretchy self-adhesive tape. Two or three layers of the tape protects the joint and provides gentle pressure to promote healing of the bursa sac or synovial sheath (I'm no anatomist). If 'caught early' and not further exacerbated the joint may heal in a week. If aggravated by continuous heavy use or injured by another blow (it doesn't take much and hurts like crazy) it may not heal for months. I've had some apparent success with high doses of vitamin A; Omega 3 may also be beneficial in promoting healing.
For over a year I had an enlarged thumb. When the symptoms matched those of a myoxoid cysts, and pressure on the thumbnail was very painful, I suspected a subungual cyst. It takes some fortitude to melt a hole in a nail with no obvious blood underneath, but I did so and expressed a 15 mm ball of clear gel. It filled again within the time it took the nail to grow another 2-3 mm. I made another hole and expressed 1 cm of synovial fluid. Nail growth was adversely affected by leakage of synovial fluid separating the nail root from the bed ultimately causing separation of the entire nail distal to the injured part of the sac. I repeatedly opened the cyst until eventually the nail was separated into two parts; I had no hope that the nail would heal completely.
At that time I had increased supplemental Beta Carotene to 28,000 (for low vision) and also began taking Omega 3 for dry eyes (it works for me). Much to my surprise the thumbnail (which had gotten progressively worse for six months) began growing 1 mm per week (2-3 times the previous rate) completely whole across the whole nail bed; it is now perfect save a few ridges. I've had no recurrence of the subungual cyst; I do experience tenderness or pressure in either of the four joints regularly affected and immediately wrap them with Coban. A benefit of the 3M product is that it can be slipped off for washing or sleeping, and can be used for many days. No other product performs as well as Coban; my interest in this 3M product is that they make lots of money on the 1" tape and keep selling it with no changes so that I can continue to buy it.

    me too

ive been experiencing a liquidy bubble on my big toe too. ive been popping it like twice/three times a year for the past like 7 years almost, it started when i was in 4th class. it just keeps on growing back on the same toe. its sooo painful when I wear shoes like ughhh. I just popped one now and clear liquid oozes out. is there a clear logical explanation for whatever is on my foot? and why does it still come back, its been like 7 years already.

I found a dime size blister on the top of my middle toe. It isn't a friction blister or a wound from an accident. I noticed it because my toe began to itch unbearably. When I scratched it, it popped, and watery clear liquid came out. The toes on either side of the blistered toe itch also, not as bad, but do not have any signs of a blister(s) forming. The next day, the blister has refilled and sometime during the day, it will poo BC of my sandals or because I'm scratching it. It has had this pattern for five days now. The itching comes and goes and I usually fill my heartbeat in ny toe when its irritated while I'm scratching. I've no other blisters or rashes on my body except for summertime heat bumps from sweating on my back and upper butt. I have the skin condition where u can see ever pore and/or hair follicle on your body, most noticeable on my arms and legs, with a continuous red hue. It doesn't bother me except it's not attractive. It runs in the women of my family on my moms side. Grandmother & her 4 daughters, my mother, my 3 daughters and I all have it. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, anxiety, reoccurring depression, idiopathic hypersomnia, hypoglycemia and am allergic to lactate. My mom has recently become allergic to the sun, developing blistered rashes that don't itch or are filled with large amounts of liquid. I developed an itchy rash on the palms of my hands while pregnant with first child, have never bf or since. Please help. Thank you.
