I too have had the "string" syndrome for several years. No diabetes, circulation problems or other obvious causes. I spend considerable time standing/walking at work and it seems to get worse at the end of the day. Just recently I realized that I had been driving a stick shift car for 10+ years and it is on the left (clutch) foot. I saw a podiatrist last year and he recognized the description immediately. He said it is due to a strained ligament that goes from one side of your foot to the other and holds the toes from spreading apart. Gave me an insert for several pairs of shoes and said it would take many weeks for it to get better. It did not. Its a nuisance but is bearable and he (the dr.) did not seem to feel that it was anything more serious than a distraction. I searched this site to see if anyone had any OTHER answers.

I also recently started waking up with this sensation in my left big toe. It raised a mild concern about whether this was some early neurological sign of something, but it doesn't sound like most of you here experienced a lot of progression in your symptoms. In my case, I walk 5 or 6 days a week, 4 - 5 miles at a time. I wonder if the wear and tear is starting to catch up with me. I am also having some pretty serious hamstring tightness and pain in the same leg; perhaps this is also related in some way. Anyway, glad I stumbled onto this thread - it has been vaguely reassuring, though obviously the answer (what is this?) remains elusive for most of you...

Hey, so I guess I'll say what everyone else has said. I was absolutely amazed that I found this. As I was typing in "it feels like there's a string or hair around my toe", I was thinking, there is no way anything is going to come up.

So, with that being said, obviously. I have this too! This is so weird. It drives me crazy. It feels like a hair is wrapped around my toe. For me too, it's mostly when I'm laying down and/or barefooted. I find myself constantly reaching down in the bed to get the "hair" out from in between my toes.

Anyway, I have nothing important to add... I don't have diabetes, I was actually just checked for that. I do have a bunion, I think I saw someone else mention that. I've also had surgery on my foot because of the bunion. But that was several years ago. This string/hair toe thing just started.

Well I will definitely keep an eye on this forum.

I too have this sensation on several of my toes, when I'm standing and sitting down. Several years ago, i was diagnosed with advanced disc degeneration, which causes pinching of my nerves (my leg also goes numb when I stand too long) I've attributed the string feeling to this diagnosis (this diagnosis was made after having an MRI)

Default Re: left foot, last 3 toes feel like string wrapped in & around them

I've been having issues w/my left hip for several years and over the past 2 years I've had coccydynia (tail bone pain) as well as spasms in my groin area. Went to ortho who just gave me a strong anti-inflammatory & muscle relaxer, but never a diagnoses. I'm scheduled to get a cortisone injection in my coccyx next week. NOW, when I lay on my left hip, it starts to throb and if I fall asleep, I'm awakened by this feeling of the plastic easter grass intertwined in between my toes on my left foot, the last 3 toes only. I wake up feeling them & checking to see what's around my toes!!!! I also have high uric acid levels which does cause stabbing pain in my toes, mainly my big toe, however this is a totally different feeling. I also had nerve conduction testing done on my legs & feet which turned out normal except for my left foot, she was at a loss as to why the testing was showing that I had no muscle tone in that foot, but I obviously do. Very strange. I just wish I could find a doctor that would listen to all these symtoms and problems and connect the dots for me. I think it all goes back to this hip which could be related to my coccyx problem?? I also have mild scoliosis is my lower back..... any ideas

Wow, that's soooo weird you typed that, it is exactly what I'm feeling with my one toe, and I did fall about 3 days back and bruised my tailbone. Must be it does affect the toes! I also have foot fungus which is what many have mentioned on here. I also have shooting pains through my feet and my sole of my foot feels bruised.

Same symptom, band aid feeling around my second toe on right foot. I do go bare footed a lot. The under side of my other toes are lightly rough and calloused, but the under side of this effected toe is silky smooth. I can feel a sensation if I poke at it, but otherwise it feels like it has a tight band around it that I am constantly flicking my toes trying to get it off. I am in my early 50's and otherwise helathy. Anyone else have the smoothness? Wondering if it is neuropathy.

Im a 33 year old female.I was in a car wreck 8 years ago and damaged my hip.I also get spasms in my inner thigh/groin area, and I also have DDD and DJD.Maybe thats whats causing the string around my toe feeling.Maybe the nerves in our back and or hip is pinched and causing reactions in our toes.

I have had this problem for about three months now in my right big toe/foot...but before that I would occasionally have a flare-up of it for a day or two and it would go away. But this time, it has stayed. My big toe feels like it is wrapped up in a lot of bandage of something or a tight rubber band. The balls of my feet feel cushioned. My entire foot feels strange and tight. Sometimes tingly. Sometimes I have nerve pain in my other toes. This has begun to flare now in my left foot. I sit at the computer all day working, but I make sure I get up from time to time...but as the day progresses my feet feel swollen (though they don't necessarily look swollen...they just feel that way). I went to my regular doctor, thinking I might have gout but he said no, that is not what it is. I went to a neurologist and he did nerve conduction studies...and concluded there was nothing wrong with my nerves. So I think next I am going to a podiatrist. Interestingly, no one has even thought to x-ray my foot! I wonder if it is arthritis. But it doesn't really feel like arthritis pain. It is totally different. I just wish someone would give me a shot or something to alleviate the discomfort. It is very annoying. At day's end, I have difficulty walking. I am 56 years old and am concerned how much worse it will get as I grow older and wish to remain independent. Any input anyone can give is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I have the sharp, piercing, shooting pain in my large toe on my right foot also. I've had it for a couple of years, NEVER totally leaving at any point. In addition, whenever I put my feet on the floor I get the "pins and needles" sensation in both feet. Incrediibly painful as well as very annoying. My diagonsis was Lupus AND Fibromyalgia. I sincerely hope NO ONE ELSE ends up with either of these as their diagonsis since I have NOT had a pain-free day since August, 2004. Good Luck Everyone, God Bless.

This just started this morning when I got up.. I thought I would Google it.
Thought maybe it was something in my brain but the Nerve seems more likely.
especially since I was self adjusting my back before bed.
Thanks... Ill reply with an update after I go to the chiropractor.

Can I join the club? I'm a healthy 68 year old woman and I just started feeling this sensation in my right big toe a few weeks ago. No pain, no discomfort, but I keep wondering what the hell it is. Glad it's not just me.

Me too? I am 43, female, maybe 10 lbs overweight. Had surgery L5-S1 when I was 25. Never had sciatica again after that. I also get tinea versicolor and have it right now. No diabetes. Blood sugar on high side of normal. Blood work otherwise normal. No MS, no disc problem in back, no problem in brain, nothing else to explain it. I felt string feeling around base of second toe on right foot. I had bunion pain and then eventually the bottom of the ball of my foot felt like I was walking on something in the middle of the ball of my foot, like a smooth rock or...hard to describe. I had a mild hammer toe (2nd toe overlapped big toe a little). Bunion wasn't that big, but really hurt. I just had bunion surgery and a tendon transfer on the second toe. The pain I feel now is like I have a piece of barbed wire in between my big toe and second toe, pulling down. Also, I feel like I have a piece of elastic or string coming out of the top of my big toe and pulling down toward the bottom of the arch of my foot. Sometimes I get electric shock like pains in toes. I am 4 weeks out from surgery. PA says it is nerve pain. He prescribed 100mg gabapentin (aka neurontin). So far it hasn't helped much if at all. Hydrocodone didn't help either. I had Xanax on hand for anxiety, but I rarely take it. I took 0.25mg, really small dose, and that helped better than anything so far. PA said that makes sense that it would help, but of course, you can't take Xanax (the short-acting kind) every day. It makes me super sleepy. I told doc gabapentin wasn't helping. I don't know yet if he will increase dose. He also mentioned maybe trying Lyrica or Cymbalta. He said it will "probably" (great) get better as the foot heals from surgery. If I get any relief from anything else, I will post again. Good luck everyone!

I have no fractures and I do not have diabetes. I regularly go to the chiropractor weekly (for about 20 years) and I did tell him about it but my back is in good condition. I have a theory... maybe its muscular. if a muscle is so tense, overworked or scar tissue had formed, there will be pressure on NUMEROUS nerves & blood vessels. your muscles learn to compensate for each other & conform to keep you functioning normally according on your daily activities.. that doesnt mean everything else will adapt as well. I suggest a really awesome, licensed massage THERAPIST ( not masseuse!!! ) No one who has just graduated.. you need someone experienced in taking the time consuming journey through each individuals muscular system... to the root of the issue or blockage.
Best way to find one: Try calling any Massage school & ask for a teacher who will do work or who has a business of their own also....deep tissue/ neuromuscular/ trigger point work*** not swedish (fluffy stuff) massage.
Honestly.. look for someone who doesnt watch what they do.. they FEEL it. ... someone who gets "lost" per say. They will start a sentence or ask you a question while they are working on you, and then just stop talking suddenly sometimes for quite a while! as they are following, finding & healing your "booboo's "

surgery creates scar tissue. with carpel tunnel syndrome, surgery just makes everything worse in time. they cut the band that holds all the tendons down around the wrist ( the retinaculum ).. yes, this helps, but only temporarily & usually has to be done again & again over time. that band is over worked, over stressed and TOO TIGHT. massage greatly improves these situations.. even after surgery, the scar tissue can be broken down greatly with time, but it is always easier BEFORE the scar tissue that the surgery created.

I also have the feeling of having string tied around my left big toe. (Apparently, it is epidemic!) It is more noticeable when there is no pressure on the toe i.e. my feet are up. It is annoying but there is nothing obviously different from the rest of the toes and the color is good. Coincidently, I have a bit of a bunion on that toe so maybe it is a nerve thing.

Using fungus cream doesn't make sense to me. You would think if there was fungus, you would see something.

I think going to a doctor about this would be embarrassing because there is nothing to see, it doesn't make sense and what could they do!

I too think that it is related to muscular, in my case it is muscle spasticity (feels as though your muscles are constantly in use even when you aren't doing anything). For me triggers for the 'string around the toe' or 'bandaged toe' (mine is the right big toe but I've had it in both before and my finger) is usually stress and generally when I am feeling run down and fatigued. I have it now, mine comes and goes and sometimes (lol you'll think I am crasy) I'll feel it all of a sudden if I think about the symptom..and as quickly as it came it can go if I stop thinking/obsessing over it. I've learnt over the years the mind is a very powerful thing we've all heard the saying 'mind over matter'. I know it is muscle spasticity as I have MS and muscle spasticity is a symptom of MY MS... (every person with MS has their own unique symptoms). I've often had my husband give me a good massage from my big toe all the way up the leg as far as the top of the thigh. Starting at the big toe. Pay attention to the bone or muscle or what ever it is that you see when you flex the toe up and the same that you can feel behind the knee and running up to the hip try to relax it. I find instant relief after this massage. Give it a try. If it doesn't work at least you have relaxed a little. Try some stress management, it can also be for me - poor sleep, cold/hot weather and lack of exercise and sitting for long periods could be affecting you also. I understand greatly having MS myself that symptoms can be caused by a lot of different illnesses/ailments. I am not saying this is what is wrong with you but its an insight to how and when it affects me. As I said I get this feeling in my index finger also. The feeling in my finger and my toe both feel as though the finger/toe is being pulled up (as if stretching the muscle out). My worst stages of this is when I am in the middle of an MS attack the muscle fatigue is incredible and incredibly immobilising... seeming like I've done a workout some days when I have done nothing at all. But always the one symptom that always appears when I have spasticity is the string around the toe pulling it up in the air.. I was first diagnosed with MS when I was 27 but did a lot of research on the internet and basically self diagnosed myself with MS when I was 23 (I am 31 now) after having a few flu injections (starting 2002) which I thought caused numbness/pins and needles sensations(something I had never experienced in my whole life it was in my stomach and back and down one side of the body). the 1st injection the symptom I dismissed as the doctor put it down to a virus in the system I didn't want to think it could be anything worse and believed him (there certainly was a virus in my system - the flu injection and this is why I had flare ups - flare ups are often caused by a virus) and after a few weeks it passed although at that point I did research on the flu injection and found links to guillian barre virus but thought it was way to severe(these days they are linking MS to guillian barre virus). the second injection I again experienced the symptoms I thought hang on there is a link here not long after is then when I sought neuro specialist advice and in 2007 after MRI, CT scan, neuro tests and a weird ass TV show/eye test and a lumbar puncture I found out I had the same markers on my genes or whatever that diagnosed me with MS. I am not saying you have MS!! But what I have learnt over the years and I guess the point I am trying to get across is to listen to your body and your symptoms they are trying to tell you things become more atune with how your body works at what time the symptoms are there and what has changed in your life if they come and go and read more about your body, it doesn't help to be come more educated about our health we'll live longer! I know that people in the past have said don't go diagnosing yourself but hang on if doctors are telling you there is nothing wrong and you god damn well know that something IS wrong then its up to you (yes?) to investigate, to manage your body and your health and become aware. Only a specialist of whom you have spent the big bucks on to invest time into your case to work out your ailment will get to the bottom of things although GPs are often pretty inciteful they are generally there to fix a common ailment or prescribe you drugs as lovely as all our GPs are they are just that General and our bodies are damned complicated.

I'm a 32 year old and have had the problem for years, but mine isn't when I wake up. Mostly when I get cold, it feels like a string is tied tightly around several of my toes. I thought it had to do with poor circulation since my hands are almost always cold. But I also have moderate scoliosis and have been to chiropractors, physical therapy, and orthopedic surgeons (no surgery, but wore a back brace for three years around ages 11-14). Now I wonder if it's all related to nerves around the spine. hmmm....

I found this article and it's spot on except that my big tow actually hurts bad. From what you describe Id' be surprised you don't have pain by now. I'm actually looking for non pain relief as I don't personally believe in taking pain meds. Does anybody actually know what this toe is suffering from and what I can do about the tied painful feeling? It's like a knot is tired around the joint making it sleepy, painful, and tingling. tia

Talking Re: ring toe?big toe numb feels tied with string

I am assuming this strange feeling of having a "string tied around" one or several of your toes is due to the amount of sugar we are eating and/or caffeine intake?

I only say this because of all the threads/forums I have read - it seems related. (Toe numbness and sugar/caffeine intake)

My pinky toe has been feeling like it has something "tied around" pretty tight although nothing is there. Coincidentally, I have been consuming ALOT of caffeine AND sugar the past couple weeks.

I read another persons post that once they stopped indulging in those two things - their "mystery toe string" went away! Worth a try!

Meanwhile, I got a little chuckle at everyone commenting on how it's unbelievable we all found this thread! "An invisible string tied around my toe" is a phrase most people take as a crazy comment!

My dad & I both have something called Raynauds disease that makes your toes and or fingers, numb, tingle, turn white become painful, and it can happen at any hour of the day. It does feel like a string is wrapped around the toe. To relieve the discomfort I massage the numb toe with heavy pressure and it helps the blood circulate back in which relieves the irritation.

OMG I have been feeling this now for over a month and stand on my feet for work EVERY day all day long. But, after reading this thread (no pun intended) I figured it out! It's Joplin's syndrome:

"Joplin's Neuroma
A Joplin’s neuroma is an entrapment of the nerve traveling along the bottom and inside area of the big toe. The common medical terminology used to define a Joplin’s neuroma is perineural fibrosis of the plantar proper digital nerve to the hallux. The pain is similar to a Morton's neuroma, but only involves the inside of the big toe. The pain can be sharp, burning, shooting, electrical, tingling or numbing. A thin “cord” can sometimes be felt and may even roll when pressure is applied. A Joplin's neuroma is usually caused by abnormal pronation (rolling in of the foot) and may also be associated with a bunion. Roll over image to see the common area of pain on the bottom of the great toe"

More here: http://www.northcoastfootcare.com/pages/Neuromas.html

Get some rigid shoes, nueroma pads, ice it, heat it!

Angry Re: ring toe?big toe numb feels tied with string

I thought I was the only one having this weird feeling. It's nice to see that I'm not alone. It feels like, when you take your sock off, like there is a string still between my toes. It only happens with my left pinky toe. I can run my hand across the top of my foot and it reacts. I also noticed today that I can touch the back of my calf and now I have the same feeling down my leg going to my toe. I have type 2 diabetes and my levels are good.. I am annoyed by this more than anything else.

annoyed and stumped

The internet is amazing, really. I've had this for a few weeks - the first time I felt it, I actually had a hair on my foot. And then I thought it was phantom. I have no other symptoms or related issues, but I just thought it was strange. Thanks for the reassurance and the information, everyone. Aloha!

it may be mercury in your body causing nerve damage. After several visits to docs and even a referral to neurologist at Mayo Clinic, thats all I can come up with. MS has been considered as a possibility but Never diagnosed. Good luck everyone! And if you find an answer please let the rest of us know........

OMG...the toe string mystery continues.mi told my boyfriend this morning I was going to google my symptoms because it is driving me crazy!!...I had bilateral bunionectomy with ostiotomy done 2 years ago. Took me a while to recover but all went ok and now this..it is my 2nd toe on left foot feels like a hair is tied around it...I do not think it is Sugar or caffeine related but will see a podiatrist soon...I massage it and soak my foot but it does not go away...I was amazed at how many others have this too...
