My daughter is a competitive synchronized skater and has been diagnosed with severs disease. She was diagnosed in late July/ early August 2008 and was given stretches and instructions to take aleve or advil when she feels the pain or it is badly inflamed. She has grown 2 inches in the past year and is still growing. She turned thirteen in August, and has still complained.

She skates about 14-15 hours a week. Today she skated for four hours, iced her heel for 20 minutes, and still complained. She was in tears, and we are calling the orthopedist tomorrow to schedule another appointment. She is limping right now, and she refuses to rest. She is insisting on doing a test in 18 days and skating two hours tomorrow and at least one or two hours without her team everyday. She took her advil and is in a little less pain, but it never goes away completely.

She is willing to stop everything besides skating, she has even said she will stop walking and go on crutches if she has to.

What should I do? What should I tell her to do? And what should I tell our orthopedist?

The treatment for Sever's is relative rest and avoidance of activities which precipitate the pain until such time that the pain is resolve. Rest may include anything up to casting. Return to activity must not be premature or too sudden. If she insists on skating and skating precipitates the pain, she will probably have to put up with the problem until the growth center in the heel closes sometime in her mid teens,
