My daughter is now 13 years old and was born bilateral club feet. She was casted when she was 4 hours old and continued to have her feet manipulated every couple of weeks with new casts put on. When she was about 6 months old she had surgery on her right foot first lenghthing her achilles and her heel bone pulled down and pined and straightened and pined her other bones in place. Then repeated the same surgery 2 weeks later on her left foot. Of course after the surgeries she was placed in hip casts for approximately 8 weeks and then went back into surgery to remove the pins. She then went and had cast impressions done of her feet and calves to make braces for her. She wore the braces until she was about 14 months old. She started walking at that time and has always been very active dancing, playing soccer, basketball. In the last 3 years she has been in a lot of pain. The only sport she does now is swimming. She is a great swimmer but her feet look aweful. Her big toe is bent clear over rubbing on her second toe and her feet are rolling in real bad and her heel bone is going out the opposite direction. She has always worn rigid inserts in her shoes. We continue to take her to a specialist. The bones in her ankles are rubbing together causing her a great deal of pain. She limps most of the time. Her ankles are very thin and her calves have very little muscle. She is 5' 8" and weights about 105 lbs.
The specialist I take her to is talking about wanting to fuse her foot in a couple of different places and that she would have no side to side movement only up and down. He was talking of having 3 - 4 surgeries on each foot. She is such a happy kid, but in so much pain with her feet. I wish I knew of some surgeon that specialized in club feet in are area. I think we need to get a second opinion. I want the best for her. I know she would like to meet other kids like herself. We really don't know of any kids in are area with club feet.
I know it bothers her that kids make fun of her feet. Of course being on the swim team at school kids really stare at her feet and are always asking her whats wrong with her.
