I had a fusion last september!!! My Big toe and have not been totally painfree to be fair- i get swelling alot especially if i have been on my feet all day!!! i am 44 and a busy mum, last week i saw the specialist again and was in SHOCK when he showed me the x-ray of my check-up!!! the screw had split in half!! he said i must have had a "micro movement and now the toe is higher from the ground than it should be!! hense why my 2nd toe is going behind the big toe!!! ughhh i was gutted when he said he would have to do the whole thing again!!!!he would also be using bone from my Ankle???? ( whats that about ) now i am on a list , had the pre-op and the call could come anytime!!! NOT HAPPY!!! hate having to have a general and more scared this time!!! especially as its not been a success!!! also worried as i do have a habit of rubbing my feet along the sheet at night (always done it lol) and am wondering have a caused this breakage???maybe they would be better putting my toe in plaster afterwards as the hard soled boot dosent seem to have done the job 1st time!!!

could be going in again as early as new year!!! ughhhhh any advise please!!:eek:

As you stated that you are on a list, it sounds like you live either in Canada or the U.K. I don't know to what degree of accountability medical providers are held there, but my recommendation, before having anything further surgery with the same provider, would be to have a truly independent well-experience foot surgeon view the pre and post-operative x-rays, as well as the operative report and follow-up notes. Hardware breaks generally occur either because of poor choice, improper placement or from the stresses of movement at a site which is not intended to move. Certainly, not all even well-performed surgeries succeed, but some can be destined for failure from the get-go. I would think it wise to first have a knowledgeable assessment of the original work.

    thanks footdoc

i spoke to my gp this morning, who said the screw broke due to movement ( poorly alined fusion) and so the op will need to be repeated to make a better union ughhhh, he said if i had been in my late years he would probably say leave it but as i am only early fortys its not worth the agony!!! and best to get it sorted

That does not really address the concerns I voiced, but why is your GP giving you this information instead of your surgeon? Also, why did you require a 2nd mpj fusion in the first place? As I stated previously, I would recommend that you have an independent specialist determine, among other things, whether the poorly aligned fusion was due to improper placement of the screw or if it occurred as a result of the breaking of the screw.
