    Hello,

I have unbrearable burning pain on the bottom of my feet, along with shooting, stabbing, and electric shock-like pain. (The burning is the worst)

My PCP did several blood work-ups (all normal), I saw a neurologist for a nerve conduction study (nerves shown healthy), and I recently saw a Physician's assistant for an "emergency" visit due to the unrelenting pain. She suggested a lower back workup, and accupuncture. (I have pain in my lower back, sustained trauma over the years, often a painful sciatic area, and muscles that always feel sore when applying a bit of pressure running up and down the sides and back of both thighs.)

I don't know if I have peripheral neuropathy; (I'm not diabetic, but do drink alcohol) I've heard that negative NCV tests do not always mean there is no neuropathy. My PCP wanted me to see a podiatrist, but I don't know what one could do if the cause is not directly in my feet.

This pain started 2 years ago, with just the shooting stabbing pain, and very cold feet during the winter with sensitivity to heat & cold. It almost completely stopped, but came back with a vengeance after hiking up in the mountains - no pain during that time, only a few weeks later. I have no numbness, only pain that makes me gasp out loud, and the burning that never goes away.

I've been taking Neurontin for nearly a year, but I just need more and more for relief, and can't afford to be "high" all day. I'm a 44 yr old woman, who recently started waiting tables 3 mos. ago - think there could be a connection - not sure.

I don't know who to go to next, and I cannot afford to keep trying one specialist after another. My lab tests aren't 100% covered.

Does anyone have any idea what I might have, and where to go next for the best diagnosis? This is ruining my life.

    Thank You,
    Laura

    Hi Laura

When I read your story it sounds like it was me that typed it! It appears I have done almost everthing you have done! I was wondering if you still have the problem or if you have fixed it! I have just recently had an MRI on the Foot to see if it is Tarsel Tunnel, (Carpel tunnel of the feet) it is a compression on the main nerve to your feet! People who suffer from it show all the symptons you have mentioned! I have tried Nurontin but with no luck, the doctors currently have me on Lyrica combined with Tramadol! The two together seems to work mildly! I am 5 years in with no diagnosis! If you have since fixed your problems or had it diagnosed at least! Could you please let me know via a posting on this website or email to graemeryan1@bigpond.com.

    I wish you well!

    Cheers

    Graeme

Sounds to me like you have fibromyalgia. I get these shooting and burning pains all over my body. Also I have sensitivity to hot and cold. Also I have pain with very little pressure on the backs of my thighs, top of buttocks, arms, and too many other places to name.

I can't believe you both have been to so many doctors and none of them have even mentioned fibromyalgia!

Sad to say there isn't anything in the world that will take it away. There are good days but mostly horribly painful bad days. :[

These are some of the symptoms of a bartonella infection and is especially likely if you have been exposed to cats, fleas or ticks although there are other sources. A general physician is unlikely to be able to diagnose or treat it. You need to find a Lyme-literate physician (LLMD) who is experienced with bartonella. Try googling 'bartonella' for more information.

I have been recently diagnosed with this and have the same symptoms. Treatment is long term (six months to a year or more) antibiotics (such as Rifampin and Biaxin) and additional supplements.

To all sufferers of foot pain, I've been there. In my early thirties I began to experience foot pain. It didn't take long before my feet felt like hot hamburger that was being squeezed in a vice. I could hardly walk. Luckily for me a co-worker gave me the name of a podiatrist that I went to see. I was prepared for him to tell me that the only solution was to cut off my feet, and I was ready to say when? Kidding aside, he measured my foot size and found that my shoes were one and a half sizes too small. He told me to buy new shows in the bigger size but not to wear them until he gives them the OK. When I first tried on the new shoes, I thought I was wearing the shoe boxes because they were so roomy. It didn't take long before the pain started to go away, and within a month all pain was gone. Now your thinking how could I be so stupid to wear shoe that didn't fit. Well, unbeknown to me I didn't know that our feet have two sized; one for the full length, and one for the arch size. My whole foot size was nine and a half, but my arch size is eleven...long arch, short toes. If you decide to give this a try, you will probably feel the shoes too roomy and you will need to put a shoe-tongue pad on the inside of the shoe-tongue to keep you heel in the back of the shoe. P.S. Don't expect your shoe salesman to know how to measure you feet...they don't.
