I have a growth on my upper foot which has increased in size in the last year. The podiatrist I went to has taken an xray and told me that it was arthritis and recommended an orthiotic insert for my shoes. Is it possible that it could be a ganglia instead? This is causing considerable pain now and impacting my daily walking. JGD

Although I am generally reticent about casting aspersions based solely on the often misunderstood discussion between patients and their doctors and/or the often incomplete offering of pertinent details by questioners regarding what might have been told to them, it is difficult for me to accept that, other than for the financial benefit of the doctor, would a competent podiatrist recommend orthotic inserts as a primary treatment for a growth of increasing size on the dorsum of the foot, whether due to arthritis or not. Ganglionic and synovial cyst are indeed a very common reason for generally painful bumps on the dorsum of the foot, especially in the mid-tarsal area at the high point of the arch. One generally consistent feature of these growths is that they are slightly movable. Such cysts are not uncommonly accompanied by osteo-arthritic spurring of the underlying bone, which would no-doubt have been seen on an appropriately taken x-ray, but if that is the case, and there are no other mitigating factors, I do not see the need for the use of orthotic inserts, which, if anything would cause even more shoe pressure and subsequent pain on the bump. Of course, as I am totally unaware as to whether your description is both accurate and total, I cannot categorically say whether you are possibly being incorrectly diagnosed and/or treated or not. Why not have an in-depth conversation with your doctor, and if still not completely satisfied with the answer received, have second hands-on opinion by a well-vetted specialist?
