Pain at base of big toe/ball of foot

    Hello,
    I've noticed an increasing amount of pain over the past month in my left big toe. Whenever I stretch it upwards or step down hard on the front of my foot, putting pressure on the base of the big toe and ball of the foot, I feel pain. It is obviously triggered by wearing heels, so I have stopped doing that, but I am wondering if there is an underlying injury ie stretched joint/ligament, and if so, what is my remedy?
