I have no idea if I should see a podiatrist or an orthopedist. I'm 43, type 1 diabetic, have flat feet, and i'm tired of limping. My ankles are swollen (but I've had that all my life). Honestly I'm not sure if they are swollen (as in retaining water) or just fat. I think it's the latter. My feet swell up something bad pretty much on a daily basis. Doesn't matter if I'm sitting or standing. Doesn't matter what kind of shoes I wear. My arches (or area where arches are supposed to be) hurt to the point that I limp severely when getting out of bed in the morning, or rising from a sitting position to walk. I'm a mess. Where do I go??

Swollen ankles can be associated with many problems, such as trauma, either chronic or acute, circulatory disorders, heart problems and other organ failures and systemic conditions. Which doctor you should see would depend upon the cause. An internist is generally the one to direct you to the correct specialist if you are in doubt.
