I am out of the country and broke my foot, the 5th metatarsal. I now have a cast and was told I would need t for 6 weeks.

The first two weeks I was told to keep off of it and keep it elevated. I am at the end of 1 week. Today it seems like it is more swollen and every time I get up, even just to eat or use the restroom, my toes turn reddish purple and the swelling is instantaneous.

Is it possible that I keep it elevated to much of the time? Is there a time limit on elevating your leg? or for to long??

    Thanks in advance.

I am unaware of any situation in which excessive elevation of an injured foot was harmful, but swelling within a cast can be a serious situation and should be evaluated immediately and addressed if deemed appropriate. Dependent rubor is not uncommon after an injury to an extremity, but that too should be checked out by knowledgeable eyes.
