My mum had bunion surgery on Tuesday 12th May and the pain in her foot is terrible and shes finding that the tablets she was recommended (ibuprofen and paracetamal) havent been taking affect at all and we've tried ice packs but still it doesnt seem to help. My mum has been unable to sleep, she's been physically sick and is finding it hard even to walk the smallest step to the toilet. We contacted the GP and they said that they could prescribe her some stronger tablets but she will be unable to get them to her just yet. Is there any thing that we can do to ease her pain an make her more comfortable?

Although in my experience, bunion surgery patients have rarely suffered "terrible" pain, I have never performed such surgery without prescribing some form of narcotic analgesic. I would consider the ibuprfen and Tylenol that she is taking generally inadequate. I generally have my patients begin taking a long-acting anti-inflammatory one day before surgery, and that seems to provide them with a head start for pain relief. It has been at most only one day since your mum's procedure, and perhaps it is too soon for her to be placing ANY weight on the foot. Elevation of the foot is generally helpful, but ice, when employed, must be used with caution, so as not to cause further embarrassment to tissues already compromised by surgery. Check with your doctor for specific directions. I don't understand why you are contacting her GP instead of her surgeon, and why she cannot have the prescription filled immediately? By your use of "mum," though, I suppose that you are in the U.K. and some assumptions of generally protocols that which I deem a no-brainer may be different there.

It is most likely a tight bandage.
Instead of posting on the internet, have her call her surgeon.
