About 6 months ago my husband was rubbing my feet when he squeezed my left foot (with his thumb under the ball of the big toe and his fingers wrapped around the side of the foot). I felt an incredibly sharp stabbing-like pain in the outside edge of the foot when he did this. This was the first time I can remember feeling any kind of pain in that area and the pain stopped immediately when he stopped squeezing (it was a very gentle squeeze). I feel no pain when I walk or wear shoes, but if any pressure is applied to the side of the foot it hurts. The pain is mainly coming from the space between where the small toe meets the foot and the mid-point of the side of the foot. I also have a heel spur in that foot, for which I was treated (it hardly bothers me at all any more). I'm a 24 year old female who doesn't play any sports and can't remember ever having hurt that foot. Now the pain has changed and is no longer sharp and stabbing- but more dull and aching, like the way it feels is you have a bad black-and-blue and you pres on it. Only this pain is down at the bone, not on the skin.

I was just wondering if anyone had ever had anything like this - any advice would be appreciated, thanks :)

I have this too, only discovered it when boyfriend was massaging my feet a couple of weeks ago and gently squeezed my foot, well both actually, the pain was horrendous, but felt like bone pain. Otherwise, I didnt realise it was there. Have always worn sensible comfortable shoes/boots with good soles, never wear heels or anything tight that makes me walk different. Anyone?

I have the same issue! I have been seeing a podiatrist but they referred me today to another specialist. My pain has been going on for about 18 months and hasnt improved with orthotics, proper shoes, or rest! In fact when I stay off my feet for more than 20 minutes I have pain for the first couple of steps I take! I would love to hear what anyone has found out about this!! I am a horse trainer so I live an extremely active life and I am currently training for a Tough Mudder competition in 2 months so I am desperate to get this foot pain under control!! I will post anything I find out tomorrow!

Just wanted to post an update: I saw the specialist today and found out that the root of my problem is something called Miserable Mal-Alignment Syndrome.....sounds crazy right!!! In short it means my Tibia is not aligned correctly and is causing strain on my feet and other body parts. Turns out that I had several other symptoms that I didnt even connect to my foot issue! He took castings of my feet and I will have customized orthotics ready in about 7 days! He also did some adjustments (similar to a chiropractor) and I felt almost immediate relief! I highly recommend asking your podiatrist about Miserable Mal-Alignment Syndrome! I am now able to start training much more intensely an will hopefully be able to kick butt at my tough mudder competition! :)

Please tell me what the name of the specialist is. I am having a lot of trouble with my feet and feel that I need to see a chiropractor but I am hesitant since the foot is swollen and in a lot of pain.

I saw my dr today I can't remember the technical name for it but he said it was
inflamation of the nerves in my foot. Lucky me I've also got a bone spur on the
same foot. He prescribed 800 mgs of IBU 3xs a day to reduce the inflamation.
If that doesn't work he said I would have to have cortisone shots in my foot which
He said are very painful. I can't wait to be able to get up and walk without
looking like a crippled old woman. I am 38 just not ready to retire yet. I work on
    my feet all day.
Hope I have been of some help.

having pain on the out side of my left foot.. noticed that I have a poping thing going on.. thought it was my bad knee.. but then realized it is in my foot..

anyone have an idea what it might be? I am thinking ligament. but it has been going on for a few months and now it seems to really hurt at times.. out of the blue sharp intense pain that makes be stop putting weight on it in mid stride.. gradual weight and I can go again.. but it always feels like it is on the verge of pain..

just had a hip replace.. and broke my wrist 3weeks later that also required surgery.. so kind of hoping there is something that can be done with out surgery.. besides the bills I need to pay off. Whew...

    any thoughts would be appreciated

inflammation of nerves in your foot is a Morton's Neuroma. I've had 3 nerves in both feet excised (snipped and removed) from between my toes to alleviate the sharp pain from my swollen nerves, which accumulated over many years of dancing and exercise. It would be a pang of sharp pain when stepping on the ball of my foot, especially first thing getting out of bed in the morning.
After several surgeries (the cortisone shots were not enough...not even worth bothering with), I still have another pain - the same one you complain of - when the foot is squeezed on both sides. Podiatrist says it could be bursitis or rheumatoid arthritis, for which the treatment is to have $450.00 orthodics made. When I googled both, the definitions did not sound like my symptons. Bursa are sacks in your feet and joints. If there is joint pain throughout various joints - knees, elbows, shoulders...its probably arthritis.

I recommend having the Morton's Neuroma surgically removed. Otherwise, the pain may subside after cortisone shots, but return and just continue to return. If it's arthritis, there is no cure - you just have to take anti-inflammatory medication for the rest of your life.
