I did something to my foot a few weeks back and it's been hurting a little bit. I got an x ray done and it's not broken. I was playing volleyball (ie. jumping up and down a decent amount) and I think that I might have strained a muscle or tendon on the top of my foot. The tightness/pain is behind the toes around the 3-5 metatarsal region on the top of the foot. Sometimes it hurts to walk on it and other times it doesn't, just as long as I am careful with it. My foot does not hurt to touch it or massage it, but if I bump it against something it hurts a bit. It does swell from time to time and gets warm in I used a little bit, but I am trying to stay off of it which isn't working too well.

Any ideas of what it might be or how severe the injury is?

Of course, without a hands-on examination, I can only speculate at what the cause of your complaint might be. But following your line of thinking that it is possibly a strain of a muscle or tendon on the top of the foot, the most likely scenario would probably involve the Extensor digitorum/hallucis brevis complex, both of which muscles arises in tandum from the anterior portion of the calcaneus in a small depression on the dorsum of the foot located in the general area which you indicate. These are small helping muscles for the Extensor digitorum longus and Extensor hallucis longus muscles, and they (the brevis muscles) are subject to injury when overstretched. There can be swelling and discomfort, but barring any serious tearing of the muscles or tendons, the condition generally resolves with adequate rest and supportive treatment. But as I pointed out in the beginning of this response, this is merely a supposition based on the description at hand and persistent problems would certainly call for a trip to the podiatrist.
