The most common cause of thickened toenails is a fungus infection of the nail plate and nail bed, but it would be unusual for only both 2nd toenails to become fungused. It may be that your 2nd toe is especially long and it continually bumps into the toe box of your shoe causing low-level chronic trauma and subsequent deformity. Aslo, it has been my experience that traumatized toenails often become fungused, but just the trauma can cause the nail to deform and thicken. A physical examination by a podiatrist or a dermatologist can likely sort this out and advise appropriate treatment.
