    Greetings,

I am a basketball player and I severely sprained my right ankle 10 days ago. My season starts on Oct. 15 so I need to figure out what Im going to do ASAP. I got an x-ray and it shows about 7 ankle sprains worth of damage. I have several bone spurs, high ankle sprain trauma, and what looks like a loose body on the interior or inside part of my ankle. I have a few questions about what I should do:

    1) Do we HAVE to get an MRI to be 100% sure if there is a loose body? My parents and I are very thin on our medical expense fund and if I need surgery I would like to just go and do it without paying an extra 1200 for an MRI

    2) If the loose body is not causing any clicking or locking do we have to remove it? Right now there is just pain…except I cant tell if that is pain from the original sprain or if its caused by the loose body

It would seem to me from your question that there is some indecision (I don't know why) as to whether or not there is a loose body and what it might be loose from. Ask your doctor why the uncertainty and what he expects the MRI to clear up. Not know what or where the possible loose body might be, it would be impossible to meaningfully answer your final question.
