Hello! I get random foot pains about twice a year, it lasts anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. It is extremely painful, my foot swells up pretty fat and hurts either the right side or left side and around my arch and top of the foot above the arch. Its usually my right foot and has happened to my left foot once but its always been the right foot. It is so painful (when i mean painful I mean Excrutiating) that I cant sleep or walk. Its a throbbing painfull dull pain but when i put pressure on the foot to walk the pain becomes VERY SHARP , i am pretty much on bed rest when this happens. This all started about 5-6 years ago.

Ive been to 3 different Podiatrists with all 3 giving me different explainations...
Ive been told the 1st time that it was a tedonititis and givin a steroid shot and put my foot in a cast for 2 weeks. The pain came back and went back and was told it might be artrithis..(i was 22 at the time..) took x rays came back negative gave me another steroid shot and some pain meds.

The next doctor i went to told me it might be gout. Took blood tests came back negative, although i had a high red blood cell count (i dont know what that has to do with my foot...)

The last doctor i went to pretty much seemed like he had no idea what it was and gave me pain meds ( which helps with pain a lil ).

The pain seems to come when i walk around all day at amusment parks or playing football, basketball and golf. There were times when it just happened without any physical activity. All the doctors ive been to cant give me an exact answer to my foot problem. i am very frustrated  please if you can help.

I live in Diamond Bar CA USA
And if you know a very good podiatrist in the LA/OC area please let me know. Thanks

I have the EXACT same symptoms.....it has happened 3 times to me.....occurs about once a year.....the pain is on the right foot near the centre of the foot on right side....this third time seems to be the worse as i am having swelling (previous times there was barely any swelling, just the excruciating pain).During my two occurences of this unknown ailment, i just rested and the pain went away within 4-5 days.In this latest episode the pain is so damn excruciating(like a major toothache but worse!)that even if a blanket touches the tender areathe pain becomes unbearable. I am going on my third day and the pain has not subsided yet.I believe this is a combination of tendonitis and gout.I am 40 years old and sit mostly in front of a computer screen all day and do moderate exercises (sit-ups,push-ups and chinups).I walk the dog everyday for a mile or 2.This last episode was triggered when i hurt my knee doing Wushu exercises (my first class!) and had a poor diet all week (mostly burgers, meat, and Wendy's frosty). If this pain does not subside within the next day or two, i am forced to see a doctor!I can just forsee the doctor prescribing me painkillers and antiinflammatory drugs! But really not "curing" this ailment. Will keep you updated......CHEERS

If the problem is gout....eat plenty of cherries or get pure cherry drinks......trying that now...

I suffer from exactly the same symtoms (in my case it's the left foot). I started taking regular exercise and improved my diet and thought this had cured the problem but it although it helped in general the problem comes back.

I hate self diagnosis but physician's advice is too general to understand the specifics. I also suffer from psorisis and think the symtoms might be related. I read that there is something called psoritic arthritis. One thing I intend to try is Glucosamine and combine this with high Omega 3 (oily fish) diet.

I am 48 years old and think that it is just one of the sort of things that effect our bodies as we get older.....hope this helps in some way.

Has anyone found the answer to this yet? It's been happening to me for 6-7 years usually every 2-3 months. I am experiencing this right now. It's EXACTLY the same symptoms as the original post. I am using crutches to get around my apartment. I stay in bed unless I have to go to the fridge or the bathroom. The pain started 2 nights ago in my lower ankle and has gradually moved to the top of my foot and the back of my heel. My foot is so swollen and I can't put any weight on it period or tears will form in my eyes. I am at the correct weight and am healthy with the exception of this. Sometimes this lasts 2 days or a week and a couple of times 2 weeks. I am positive that a stab wound is only a fraction of the pain I'm experiencing. I wish somebody could post if they have found the answer to this as it's greatly affecting my life...

I can relate, ive been to doctors twice, and only thing i get is vicodin and standard RICE procedures (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). The pain is so bad that even trying to sleep can become difficult as i have to find the right possition where the foot is supported but yet not touching anything but i cant have it dangling by the ankle as that will hurt just as much. I have only once found relief but only after 5 pills of maximum strength ibuprofen (Advil) which is a large dose (2500mg) and besides numbing the pain it put me to sleep. But because advil will kill your kidneys after a while i dont want to keep taking it.

Anyone know of something i can take weather its over the counter or a home remedy to ease the pain? if i had something for the pain i wouldnt really care when this happens every so often. (i would try using both advil and tylenol for now but without doctor supervision i dont know what dosing i can do, and i wont do vicodin no more as i pee blood)

Would be nice to find a doc that could figure out what was wrong. I have the exact symptoms going on 4 or 5 years. The only thing I can do is elevate, take Aleve, ice and crutches. It hurts just to move the darn thing much less put any weight on it.

The best thing for everyone with this problem is to still try to find a doctor who can make the correct diagnosis. It can be a pain going from specialist to specialist to find answers, but it's important to get diagnosed so that you may receive the correct treatment.

A possible, but rare, condition that may be causing the symptoms you have is CRPS (Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome) which is usually brought on by an injury (it doesn't have to be a major injury). Typically CRPS is chronic in nature, and you mentioned that your symptoms are intermittent (I'm unsure whether CRPS can show symptoms intermittently, but I know that CRPS can go into remission and then come back). I'm just thinking off the top of my head, here, so hopefully you don't have CRPS.

I made a mistake: CRPS stands for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, not Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. It doesn't seem that this is your situation, except your mention of severe pain and swelling (and even sensitivity to touch) some of the many symptoms of CRPS as well as of other possible conditions, so that's why it's important to keep searching for answers from doctors.

Had swelling in both feet lasted 3 months. I have diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. Went to 3 podiatrist and 2 ortho surgeons. The smartest of them all hit on that I had charcot disease and lis franc fractures bilaterally (never knew it happened). It really sucks and hurts 24/7. I dont know if this is your problem but it sounded similar.

I am experiencing the same symptoms right now with the pain in my left foot right below my 2nd smallest toe in that joint. My foot swells to the point where my toes don't touch the ground when set flat on the ground. I have found that taking Aleve (NSAID, Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) at the first hint of pain (it usually starts by feeling like a kink in my foot...sorta like a joint that you feel needs to be cracked) makes it subside before it even gets a chance to swell up.

I've had a doctor X-Ray it with no results, I've had a different doctor say it may be allergy related and to take anti-histamine when it happens. That didn't work.

hi i had a similar experience with the pain radiating from between the toes. (happened 2 or 3 times maybe a year between episodes). an orthopedist diagnosed it as a neuroma

I am again experiencing this extreme pain, but first experienced this probably 6 years ago. My doctor did MRI after X-rays showed nothing and found that there was fluid on and around my tendons, but did not know why it was there. I received a shot of cortizone and for about 2 or 3 years had no signs of it, but it is back and worse then before! I cant even have blankets on my foot without being in pain!!!! PLEASE somebody come up with a answer. Thanks. Laura in California.

    Swollen feet with extreme pain

I have many foot issues and I can't find anyone that can cure me. I do, however, have a receipe that may help some of you. I take 2 Gabapentin (100 MG) and 1 Tramadol (50 MG) every three to four hours and this helps to minimize the pain as long as I can stay off my feet or put my feet up. I also take 500 mg Naproxen 2 times daily. I also take Methocarbamol (750 MG) 2 times daily. These meds seem to help somewhat, but I feel like I am hurting my body by taking them. I must take them in order to control most of the pain. I've been told by the 4th Ortho I saw and he said it is probably due to nerve issues because of herniated discs (L4, L5 & S1). I also have cronic plantar fasciiatis, heel spurs, flat feet, mortons neuroma surgery on right foot, and metetarsalgia. I was medically discharged from the U.S. Army just over a year ago and it is the Army where I damaged my feet for life. My feet also swell pretty good everyday. I hope this post helps all of you. If anyone has anything that may help me please write. I hope the best for all of you!

Re: Swollen feet with extreme pain

I have been getting sever foot pain from both feet on and off for the past three years. I would weak up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I could not walk on my left or right foot(which every foot it was at the time). It was so sore that my bed sheets would hurt my foot. I have gone the the hospital 4 to 5 times and they couldn't figure it out. They checked for gout,x-rayed it, tried to tell me that I must have rolled my ankle, all kinds of things they were saying and they were all wrong! As fast as it comes it sometimes goes. I could walk up with no pain.no trace of pain at all overnight. It gets so bad that I have to use crutches; I could not even touch my foot without screaming in pain. I have been off work because of a back injury that happened almost four years ago and I was told by a WSIB back specialist that this is the direct result of my back injury (L4,L5,S1). No other Doctor has second that opinion and I'd like to know if anyone out there was told the same thing! I makes sense to me because I never had this problem until I was injured.WSIB was forced me back to work and everything has got worse, my back and my foot problems. I just spent Last Saturday in Emerg because of this foot pain. Had to go there in crutches because I could not touch my foot or it would send me through the roof. Second time in Emerg in a month and a half because of my feet, that time it was my right foot. Nice to know that I’m not the only one with this condition. All we need is a solution.

yea man mine is doing the same nobody can give me an answer to mine......been to several doctors.........mine is towards my toes near my arch and on top of my foot sometimes its on the right side of my foot sometimes its on the left.....and swells to a knot almost....been dealing with mine for going on 4 years....started when i was 24....now 28 and no answers been through tons of x-rays and i think my doctors get annoyed when i call them now....they just tell me there is no break no fracture.......and to ice it......take anti-inflams and keep elevated....they said it could be a fallen arch...........and to take bottle water freeze it and step on it and roll it under my foot........it helps for short term purposes but thats it.....im actually getting ahold of another foot doctor were i live and there going to see if i have crossed nerves cause im getting burning sensation with mine now....and going to do a m.r.i on it.....i do ok on it learned to walk different on it when i realy put weight on it it feels like my whole foot will collapse it hurts something awefull.....and im on my feet 10 hours a day plus at home with my kids.....ive learned to just suck it up ........but if i sit down for the night im done lol im not getting back up cause once i take my wraps off and shoes off and elevate it it puffs up like a balloon and i can barely go to the bathroom....i have to literaly drag my foot........its funny in ways but what can u do but laugh at it cause if i was watching me getting around i would find some humor in it.........i will repost after i get back from my m.r.i maybe it could help a little ....take care.
