Toes are generally left exposed in most castings of the foot for fractures.

The attending doctor should be satisfied that the cast is applied such that movement of the toes will not affect proper immobilization. I cannot assure you that your cast is properly applied.

 

Thanks, Foot Doc. Whenever the toes are exposed (and in case of the fracture described above), does that normally mean that movement is allowed and encouraged, or could movement still be contraindicated in some such cases?

Also, in general (and when the foot is in a cast as described above), does moving the smallest toe create movement in the 5th metatarsal bone that could potentially pull apart the fractured ends of the bone?

First of all, it is important that at least the ends of the toes be visible so that restriction of blood flow in the limb can be noted. In a well-applied cast, there is no reason to believe that the ability to move the 5th toe would have an adverse effect on the immobilization of a fracture at the base of the metatarsal.
