Every so often I will experience excruciating pain in my left foot (toward the inside of my foot just above the arch). The pain lasts no more than 20 - 30 seconds but when it occurs I can't move my foot even the slightest bit, or else it feels as if all my bones will shatter and break through my skin. After the 20 - 30 seconds there might be some slight, dull pain for a minute or so, but now my foot will be fully functional, as if nothing happened. This used to occur maybe every month or so, only once, typically after standng up. Most commonly this would occur as I would move from an indian style sitting position. However, recently this has become a much more common occurence, even happening while standing if I put pressure on my left foot in the wrong way. The pain really doesn't affect my life since, as soon as the pain passes everything is perfectly normal. The increased frequency concerns me though. In the last week I have had three of these pain episodes.

I'm a 21 year old girl with no health problems. I don't take any medications, and I also don't exercise heavily.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I have no idea where to begin looking for information.

I've experienced a similar pain in my foot. Research on the internet hasn't provided me with any meaningful information, though I now know I am not the only person who has experienced this sort of pain. My best advice to you would be to visit a podiatrist and maybe get an x-ray. Unless of course someone else on this site has a better idea.

    Good Luck!

Exactly what I've been experiencing, and I'm getting worried. Has anybody found any answers for this?

Same exact thing. Left foot, inside. 21 male with an average diet. Why are we all posting this around the same time? It really hurts, then instantly gone. It will happen sometimes when I'm just sitting down. Someone help!!

Yes, I've had a similiar problem for about three months (upper and inner). I feel it especially in bed prior to rising. When I put my foot to the ground it disappears shortly afterwards. I'm a hillwalker, and when I'm walking on the hills it never bothers me. However, the next day it flares up and therefore prevents me from going out again anytime soon.

Same here. I've had the sharp pain (usually when I misstep on the ball/large toe of the right foot) once every few weeks ... for the past 15 YEARS! I'm now 42 yo, fit, don't over exercise. Although I was an athlete when younger that seems to be a root of many pains now.

As you have said, its not big enough annoyance to endure multiple doctor visits and referrals and the beating of wearing orthotics ... so I put up with it.

Just wish I knew what it was.

I've had two x-rays of my foot last week, so if I get any insights into the problems I'll post back here. And yes, I was a marathon runner for fifteen years so may have predisposed myself to complaining bones at my present stage of life.

  8. I have experienced the same symtoms(left foot arch area) when I am walking. I have the pain once a week I guess.
I don't exercise, I have not played any sports.
I walk with hills about once a week, but usually wearing sneakers.

I'm 110 lbs 5 '4'' 25 years old female. There was no big increase in my weight.
The symtom has been about a month.
My pain last just for couple seconds and was gone immediately.
It doens't bother me that much but I want to know the reason for this.

When one of us finally finds out why we have this foot problem we'll post the information here. Fingers crossed! ☺

I just had this start happening just over the last couple of days. I'm active (go to the gym minimum 5 days a week) but I am having a joint problem in my left knee due to injury. I thought it was happening because I am leaning on my right leg more (the stabbing pain happened in the right leg only).

Six months have passed and the pain has not gone entirely. I've had x-rays but nothing unusual was found. Perhaps more time is needed. :(

Well, here we are in April and this injury which manifested itself last July still hasn't cleared up. From the top of my left foot (above the instep) it's a bone down on the right side with pain extending toward my left big toe.

It's at its worst when in bed but disappears when I step out of bed onto the floor. I've been to a physiotherapist (€65 per visit) about four times, had orthotics made, but I'm still no better. I'm at a loss as to what I should do. :(

Might want to see a podiatrist who knows something about trigger points

28 year old female, 5'1" 105 pounds, average diet and no exercise. Though it only last for 30 seconds, the pain is excruciating and always an inconvenience. If anyone knows or finds the answer please post it. It's such a short pain but what is the underlying reason and is it serious?

Wow! I experience the exact same thing. I get it on right foot near the top of the arch. It is very sporadic, I might get a few days of continuous bursts of pain and then go a couple of months without getting it. But today it came back, and it is SO painful, I basically jumped out of my seat. The pain is SOOOO bad and localized, like if it where a pinched nerve or something similar. I hope there is some reasonable explanation for this.

Well im 22yrs and i've been having that pain for the past four days. I noticed everyone has been posting their comment but there's no solution or idea as to what it could be and if it's something serious. Is there any doctor of specialist to make a comment on this site?

Hi, I came here because of similar pain.

Two causes come to mind. It could either be diabetic- (or elevated blood sugar level-) related nerve pain, common in feet.

OR, what's more likely for peeps here who exercise and have optimal body weight, is a deficiency in calcium, magnesium, and zinc. I have to avoid dairy products, so that may be my problem. Google "foot pain + calcium deficiency" and see if that sounds plausible.

As with any bothersome health problem that persists, consult a good internist Dr. to rule out all the big stuff. Breathe a sigh of relief, and then try out other minor solutions, one at a time. Here's to finding our answers. :) God Bless....

I also have this sudden sharp pain in my left foot. It started recently, it will go away for a few days and then comes back. It doesn't matter if I am sitting, standing, or laying down. In bed at night I can't go to sleep when it happens. It occurs as much as every few minutes. The pain is intense for a few seconds and then goes away. I tried putting heat on it last week and then it went away for a few days. I don't know if it was just a coincidence or if it really helped. I normally do take calcium on a regular basis, but have not for a few months. I started taking it again today to see if that does anything. Each time it starts it seems to be worse. Today, it is almost unbearable. I think I will have to see a chiropractor. My left foot is flat and I plan on getting new shoes or some arch supports to see if this helps. Luckily, this has not happened yet while I am working. I don't know how I would work with this. I have today off and hope the pain is gone by tomorrow. It is very irritating and I wish there was an answer to the problem. Thanks for listening.
