Pain at the base of toe nail

For the past week or so, my top of my big toe right beneath the base of my toenail has been tender to touch. It doesn't hurt to walk, it is just when something bumps against it, it hurts like heck. I removed my toe nail polish, and there is a possibly that the nail might be coming in purplish, but can't really tell at this point. Also, as far as I can remember, I can't recall dropping anything on it or smashing it. This is the toe that about 10 years ago I did break. Could this be some kind of arthritis in my toe? I am only 25, could it be gout? Or is it something else?
