Default Inwards walking

Hello,

My eldest daughter, who's almost six years old has been walking inwards since she was a baby. I got worried and took her to our GP who reassured me that she will grow out of it by the time she'll be older; I wasn't entirely happy and she referred my daughter to a consultant podiatrist. The consultant examined her 6 months ago and he said is nothing wrong with her feet; the inwards walking is coming from her knees, and that based on his experience 90% of cases in my daughter's situation will resolve itself by the time she'll be 9 or 10 years old. Now, I am very distraught every time I look at her walking - and of course, and my husband and my-self always ask her to "walk straight"...- ; I don't see any improvement, the teacher tells me she is clumsy, tripping, etc....; and I feel it must be something more we can do for her than just waiting...

Any piece of advice would be much appreciated

Regards,
Mihaela Corcoran

So-called "pigeon-toe" walking can be caused by internal rotations anywhere from the hip to the ankle and feet. Opinions among competent practioners vary as to if, when and what type of intervent needs to be considered, and at what ages. Tibial torsion seems to be more common in ages under 2 and may be the result of fetal position. Internal rotations at the hip seem to be more the cause beyond age 2. When the knees are a problem (a condition known as genu varum), bowing at the legs is a common feature. It would be impossible for me without performing my own examination to speak to you of this problem in anything but general terms which may or may not apply to you child's case. The only means of obtaining a real opinion is by selecting a doctor in whom you have confidence for good medical reasons and consideriing his/her advice. On the Internet you will obtain only opinions from those who will not take responsibilty for the results.

Wink Re: Inwards walking

Hi there

I know what you're talking about. I am now 32 years old and I have walked inwards all my life. My parents told me to walk straight, but it didn't help.

If I concentrate on my walk, I will walk 'properly', but as soon as I don't think about how I am walking I will walk inwards.

Until now I have now hip problems, or knee problems.

Hope that helps.

Kat
