Red face Can a broken toe be diagnosed as Hammer toe

I injured my second toe on my left foot several months ago. It never seamed to heal so I finally went to a doctor and he said I had hammer toe and wanted to do surgery on it.
He said he could'nt see anything else wrong with it.
I don't have corns, sores or any problems with my shoes. The joint is still good but just hurts when it gets bumped.
If he did the surgery is there a perticular type I should get to maintain the joint?
From what he told me he was going to do, it sounded like he would scrape the ends of the joint and it would fuse together. I really dont want to have that.

A fusion procedure for hammertoe correction, though it may simply be the surgeon's typical procedure of choice, are generally reserved for severe deformities which cannot successfully be corrected by what I would consider more functional surgical means. It is certainly possible that an untreated or improperly treated fracture of a toe could result in a hammertoe deformity, but that sort of situation should generally be something of which the patient was well aware. With no ability to examine your toe, as usual, I am only able to comment in terms of non-specific generalities. If you have reservations about the diagnosis and/or the suggested treatment, obtain another opinion for a well-vetted and qualified doctor.
