Question Lisfranc injury

My son who is 20 and going to school out of state is scheduled to have surgery in a few days for lisfranc injury from playing rugby.. he doesn't want me to fly in to help him, he says "it's no big deal"... I think he's going to be in a lot more pain than he thinks, and he will need more help than he thinks. I don't want to be a "smother", and he does have roomates and friends who are more than willing to help out. What do you think, is it "no big deal" or should I go anyway? Any info on the surgery & recovery would be great to know.

It would be rather presumptuous and inappropriate for me to advise as to whether you should or should not be there when or after your son has surgery, and I won't do that. Certainly all serious surgery has the potential and likelihood of causing pain, but the degree of pain is, to a great extent, less important than one's ability to deal with it, and , though I cannot speak for your son in that respect, I think that you might be a far better judge of that than I. A Lisfranc injury is a potentially serious one which often takes a great deal of time from which to recover, even when skillful surgery is performed. But, as I have attempted to state, the essence of your question is personal and social rather than medical, and I don't think that a specific answer from me on your issue would be particularly helpful in your or any similar individual case.
