Default Discolored soles of feet

A couple of days ago my husband asked me to put some lotion on the soles of his feet. His feet are very very dry expecially along the edges and he has had some severe cracking along the edges of his heels for a number of years. I was horrified when I looked at the bottom of his feet as he had areas that were bright white or maybe yellowish. On one foot he had a toe that was very bright white, also the heel on one of the feet and the ball of the foot on the other foot. I also noticed a couple of spots of a dark blue, almost looked like a bruise. I told him there was some discoloration, but didn't show him my alarm as I didn't want to frighten him.

He has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, but is handling it with diet for now. He also has heart disease, a pace maker as well as had bypass surgery. He is 68 years old, had smoked for 30 years, (doesn't smoke now) and does moderate exercise.

Thanks for any help. Lynda

Without an examination, it is not really possible to say whether the findings you report are of benign etiology or an indication of imminent or already serious circulatory problems. Especially in view of the fact that he is a diabetic, any foot related problems should be brought to the attention of a knowledgeable professional who can provide a hands-on examination and evaluation. To risk the possibly drastic consequences for the sake of convenience and/or to save the cost of proper care would be a very foolish and dubious savings.
