Can someone help me please? No one seems to know what the matter is and it is really getting me down.
I am a 25 year old female and I have been experiencing pain in my foot since 23rd December 2009. I had slept fine the night before but when I got out of bed and put weight on my foot I experienced pain in my right foot and had to sit down. Within an hour it was fine and I continued as normal. The same happened on the 24th but quickly was fine and I went out in heels that evening. As far as I am aware I didnt not fall over or but my foot that night but the next day I could not walk.
(At this point Il mention that the only injury I have had was 3-4 weeks earlier when I fell down 3 steps and the first thing to hit the floor was my shins- I did get up ok, just shaken, and walked fine after this, only bruises to show)
To get around for the next few days I was having to walk on the right side of my foot. I was able to weight gain on my heel with very little discomfort. As it was the Christmas period I was unable to get to a doctor so on the 28th I went to A&E after waking at 5am with such intense pain I was in tears. I was unable to put weight on my foot and lifting my foot off the floor was very painful- kind of like a couldnt bare the gravity pushing down on it. This feeling gradually went away as I used it more. (I can only compare this to when I broke my arm and I couldnt hold it without support from my other arm).
It was not x-rayed in A&E and I was told to rest with it raised, take ibuprofen and use an ice pack. 5 days later still in a lot of pain I went to my GP, he thought it was my ligments and I had a sprain. He atold me to walk on it was much as possible and perscribed me with stronger anti-inflamatories. These tablets were like magic and as far as a remember my foot felt almost better ( I even managed to do a little sledging) just before I ran out tablets I was experiencing more pain and with work commitments I had to go a couple of days with no tablets- this was like going back to square 1 (very painful)
The Dr referred me for a x-ray but it did not show anything ( only 2 views done- right of my foot and from the top)
( I have now been taking anti-inflams for 5- 6 weeks and they help me get around but dot seem to take the pain away as well as the first lot did)
Referred to Podiatrist who had no idea what was up with it. She felt the symptoms were inconsistent as the pain moves around my foot. she put some tape around my foot (didnt do anything) and told me to get a stretchy band and practise flexing and bending my foot at the ankle as well as twisting my foot to both sides (so far this is not helping). She was gave me an insole to put in my foots.
It can feel different everyday but it is mainly on top and on the right of my foot. It can be painful when I move my toes. Yesterday I could stand on the foot with all the weight but I felt wobbly (usually I have good balance) and the main pain was when I lifted my foot coming out of a step. When my foot is hurting more it swells (always a little swollen) and goes red and feels warm to touch. When I press in the middle top of foot it is tender. SOmetimes the side is tender too.
Last night I forgot to take a tablet and this morning it was really painful. Sometimes after sleeping it can be painful to straighten my foot. Within an hour of putting up with it and trying to walk the pain can subside to a manageable amount.
As Im sat here it is aching in the middle of my foot e.g. forward and below my ankle.
Ive tried walking on it, resting it but I cant find a pattern to what makes in worse or better except for the tablets.
Does anyone have any ideas!????? Anything would help, as Il offer it to the Dr as a suggestion.
Sorry for writing so much but it was been an eventful few weeks.

It sounds like you may need an MRI. It could be that when you fell down the steps you bruised or pulled something. I would think that if you sustained some type of injury worse than a bruising, you'd have more consistent pain. I broke my foot in 2 places in October 2007 and my foot hurt constantly. One bone I broke was the navicular bone (which is on top of the foot) and that did show up on the x-ray, but I also had a hairline fracture in the sub-talar (ankle) joint and that showed up only on the MRI. I had to wear an orthopeadic boot for 5 months and use crutches for the first 2 months. I also went to physical therapy for 3 months. Even after doing all of that, I ended up having to undergo arthroscopic surgery in Dec. 2008 to clean out the scar tissue. After that, my foot has done pretty good, but I think only because I did everything that the doctor told me to do since the injury. My brother-in-law is a podiatrist and he said that since I injured the ankle joint, I was in for a long recovery (he was correct). He said that it was extremely important to do everything that my doctor told me to do because it could make the difference in my recovery.
Of course, I broke my foot and your injury probably isn't that extensive. I would suggest to stay off the foot as much as you can. You need to sort of start over again with the healing process. Don't wear any high heels and don't do any exercising on the foot for a while. Keep taking your anti-inflammatory medications and put ice/heat on the foot when you are experiencing alot of pain. I know you may hate giving up your high heels and exercising for a while, but be patient and try it and see if that helps. If you have any type of bruising, wearing heels and putting alot of stress on the foot can make it worse. Try it for a month and see what happens. If you stay off it and after a month it's still hurting, then find an orthopeadic doctor and see if they will do an MRI on the foot. There may be more going on than what the x-ray shows. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks or your reply. I havent been able to to even think about wearing heels since Christmas or do excercise, its too painful. I have to walk on it as I have a full time job in the community. I think Il go back to the GP this week and asked to be referred on.
Based on your description, my guess is you are suffering from Plantars Faciitis. I can explain more to you, but to get a quick hang of what it is, google it. Or look at youtube - there is a 30 minute video of the problem and the possible solution. Good luck. Anurag.
I have the same problem which is why I googled this. One day I experienced terrible foot pain in the beginning of the night. The pain was so bad I couldn't walk without crutches for days. The whole episode of pain lasted about two weeks until it finally subsided. Then it started to act up on my right foot only intermittently ever since then. I had it x-rays with no findings. Now it swells and this last episode lasted longer, for about a month with the pain generalized in my right foot but going from big toe, to ankle, to side of foot, etc.. I now walk funny, almost like my right leg grew longer than my left leg. Any help on this problem would be appreciated.
