Default Foot inflammation

I have a painful red inflammation that started on the side of my big toe, Not the joint, and now has also moved to the outside of my foot as well. Red, slightly hot and it hurts to walk, although I can. What could this be?

Among the considerations would have to be infection and gout, though gout would generally involve the joint. But medicine is not a guessing game, and you need to see a doctor for a real diagnosis and treatment.
