Default Swollen foot with extreme pain

Hello! I get random foot pains about twice a year, it lasts anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. It is extremely painful, my foot swells up pretty fat and hurts either the right side or left side and around my arch and top of the foot above the arch. Its usually my right foot and has happened to my left foot once but its always been the right foot. It is so painful (when i mean painful I mean Excrutiating) that I cant sleep or walk. Its a throbbing painfull dull pain but when i put pressure on the foot to walk the pain becomes VERY SHARP , i am pretty much on bed rest when this happens. This all started about 5-6 years ago.

Ive been to 3 different Podiatrists with all 3 giving me different explainations...
Ive been told the 1st time that it was a tedonititis and givin a steroid shot and put my foot in a cast for 2 weeks. The pain came back and went back and was told it might be artrithis..(i was 22 at the time..) took x rays came back negative gave me another steroid shot and some pain meds.

The next doctor i went to told me it might be gout. Took blood tests came back negative, although i had a high red blood cell count (i dont know what that has to do with my foot...)

The last doctor i went to pretty much seemed like he had no idea what it was and gave me pain meds ( which helps with pain a lil ).

The pain seems to come when i walk around all day at amusment parks or playing football, basketball and golf. There were times when it just happened without any physical activity. All the doctors ive been to cant give me an exact answer to my foot problem. i am very frustrated please if you can help.

I live in Diamond Bar CA USA
And if you know a very good podiatrist in the LA/OC area please let me know. Thanks

I have the EXACT same symptoms.....it has happened 3 times to me.....occurs about once a year.....the pain is on the right foot near the centre of the foot on right side....this third time seems to be the worse as i am having swelling (previous times there was barely any swelling, just the excruciating pain).During my two occurences of this unknown ailment, i just rested and the pain went away within 4-5 days.In this latest episode the pain is so damn excruciating(like a major toothache but worse!)that even if a blanket touches the tender areathe pain becomes unbearable. I am going on my third day and the pain has not subsided yet.I believe this is a combination of tendonitis and gout.I am 40 years old and sit mostly in front of a computer screen all day and do moderate exercises (sit-ups,push-ups and chinups).I walk the dog everyday for a mile or 2.This last episode was triggered when i hurt my knee doing Wushu exercises (my first class!) and had a poor diet all week (mostly burgers, meat, and Wendy's frosty). If this pain does not subside within the next day or two, i am forced to see a doctor!I can just forsee the doctor prescribing me painkillers and antiinflammatory drugs! But really not "curing" this ailment. Will keep you updated......CHEERS

I suffer from exactly the same symtoms (in my case it's the left foot). I started taking regular exercise and improved my diet and thought this had cured the problem but it although it helped in general the problem comes back.

I hate self diagnosis but physician's advice is too general to understand the specifics. I also suffer from psorisis and think the symtoms might be related. I read that there is something called psoritic arthritis. One thing I intend to try is Glucosamine and combine this with high Omega 3 (oily fish) diet.

I am 48 years old and think that it is just one of the sort of things that effect our bodies as we get older.....hope this helps in some way.

Has anyone found the answer to this yet? It's been happening to me for 6-7 years usually every 2-3 months. I am experiencing this right now. It's EXACTLY the same symptoms as the original post. I am using crutches to get around my apartment. I stay in bed unless I have to go to the fridge or the bathroom. The pain started 2 nights ago in my lower ankle and has gradually moved to the top of my foot and the back of my heel. My foot is so swollen and I can't put any weight on it period or tears will form in my eyes. I am at the correct weight and am healthy with the exception of this. Sometimes this lasts 2 days or a week and a couple of times 2 weeks. I am positive that a stab wound is only a fraction of the pain I'm experiencing. I wish somebody could post if they have found the answer to this as it's greatly affecting my life...

I can relate, ive been to doctors twice, and only thing i get is vicodin and standard RICE procedures (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). The pain is so bad that even trying to sleep can become difficult as i have to find the right possition where the foot is supported but yet not touching anything but i cant have it dangling by the ankle as that will hurt just as much. I have only once found relief but only after 5 pills of maximum strength ibuprofen (Advil) which is a large dose (2500mg) and besides numbing the pain it put me to sleep. But because advil will kill your kidneys after a while i dont want to keep taking it.

Anyone know of something i can take weather its over the counter or a home remedy to ease the pain? if i had something for the pain i wouldnt really care when this happens every so often. (i would try using both advil and tylenol for now but without doctor supervision i dont know what dosing i can do, and i wont do vicodin no more as i pee blood)

Would be nice to find a doc that could figure out what was wrong. I have the exact symptoms going on 4 or 5 years. The only thing I can do is elevate, take Aleve, ice and crutches. It hurts just to move the darn thing much less put any weight on it.

The best thing for everyone with this problem is to still try to find a doctor who can make the correct diagnosis. It can be a pain going from specialist to specialist to find answers, but it's important to get diagnosed so that you may receive the correct treatment.

A possible, but rare, condition that may be causing the symptoms you have is CRPS (Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome) which is usually brought on by an injury (it doesn't have to be a major injury). Typically CRPS is chronic in nature, and you mentioned that your symptoms are intermittent (I'm unsure whether CRPS can show symptoms intermittently, but I know that CRPS can go into remission and then come back). I'm just thinking off the top of my head, here, so hopefully you don't have CRPS.

I made a mistake: CRPS stands for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, not Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. It doesn't seem that this is your situation, except your mention of severe pain and swelling (and even sensitivity to touch) some of the many symptoms of CRPS as well as of other possible conditions, so that's why it's important to keep searching for answers from doctors.

Had swelling in both feet lasted 3 months. I have diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. Went to 3 podiatrist and 2 ortho surgeons. The smartest of them all hit on that I had charcot disease and lis franc fractures bilaterally (never knew it happened). It really sucks and hurts 24/7. I dont know if this is your problem but it sounded similar.

I am experiencing the same symptoms right now with the pain in my left foot right below my 2nd smallest toe in that joint. My foot swells to the point where my toes don't touch the ground when set flat on the ground. I have found that taking Aleve (NSAID, Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) at the first hint of pain (it usually starts by feeling like a kink in my foot...sorta like a joint that you feel needs to be cracked) makes it subside before it even gets a chance to swell up.

I've had a doctor X-Ray it with no results, I've had a different doctor say it may be allergy related and to take anti-histamine when it happens. That didn't work.

Cool Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

I am again experiencing this extreme pain, but first experienced this probably 6 years ago. My doctor did MRI after X-rays showed nothing and found that there was fluid on and around my tendons, but did not know why it was there. I received a shot of cortizone and for about 2 or 3 years had no signs of it, but it is back and worse then before! I cant even have blankets on my foot without being in pain!!!! PLEASE somebody come up with a answer. Thanks. Laura in California.

Question Swollen feet with extreme pain

I have many foot issues and I can't find anyone that can cure me. I do, however, have a receipe that may help some of you. I take 2 Gabapentin (100 MG) and 1 Tramadol (50 MG) every three to four hours and this helps to minimize the pain as long as I can stay off my feet or put my feet up. I also take 500 mg Naproxen 2 times daily. I also take Methocarbamol (750 MG) 2 times daily. These meds seem to help somewhat, but I feel like I am hurting my body by taking them. I must take them in order to control most of the pain. I've been told by the 4th Ortho I saw and he said it is probably due to nerve issues because of herniated discs (L4, L5 & S1). I also have cronic plantar fasciiatis, heel spurs, flat feet, mortons neuroma surgery on right foot, and metetarsalgia. I was medically discharged from the U.S. Army just over a year ago and it is the Army where I damaged my feet for life. My feet also swell pretty good everyday. I hope this post helps all of you. If anyone has anything that may help me please write. I hope the best for all of you!

I have been getting sever foot pain from both feet on and off for the past three years. I would weak up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I could not walk on my left or right foot(which every foot it was at the time). It was so sore that my bed sheets would hurt my foot. I have gone the the hospital 4 to 5 times and they couldn't figure it out. They checked for gout,x-rayed it, tried to tell me that I must have rolled my ankle, all kinds of things they were saying and they were all wrong! As fast as it comes it sometimes goes. I could walk up with no pain.no trace of pain at all overnight. It gets so bad that I have to use crutches; I could not even touch my foot without screaming in pain. I have been off work because of a back injury that happened almost four years ago and I was told by a WSIB back specialist that this is the direct result of my back injury (L4,L5,S1). No other Doctor has second that opinion and I'd like to know if anyone out there was told the same thing! I makes sense to me because I never had this problem until I was injured.WSIB was forced me back to work and everything has got worse, my back and my foot problems. I just spent Last Saturday in Emerg because of this foot pain. Had to go there in crutches because I could not touch my foot or it would send me through the roof. Second time in Emerg in a month and a half because of my feet, that time it was my right foot. Nice to know that I’m not the only one with this condition. All we need is a solution.

Unhappy Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

I can't even begin to explan the pain I'm in. This is the second time my foot has flared up and the cause is unknown. The first time the ER, thought I was crazy and insisted I had to have hurt my foot in some way an would not take " I went to bed and woke up with a swollen painful swollen foot" after trays and pain mess I was sent home. 2 days later I received a phone call from the hospital my xrays were miss read and. I indeed had broken a small bone in my foot. It took a good 6 weeks to heal but how I broke it was never discovered. 3 weeks ago my foot swelled and hurt like it had when it was broken. I didn't rush to a Dr. thinking they would just say it was broke again. But after 3 weeks of pain I broke down and went to be seen. Again with no injury, I had no explanation as to how or why my foot hurt and this time the pain was Sharp and radiating to the point of tears. The xray taken said " negative" so I was sent home with pain meds.and a Dr. Saying I had a bruised foot. I'm so frustrated, how do you bruise without injury and no black and blue mark. As much as I dis like pills I took them as fast as I could but the pain hardly subsided. In fact I felt high and my foot still hurt. So here I am, on pain meds with my foot up, in pain , and not knowing what the cause is or who to see next. Also thank you all for sharing your stories, at least I know I'm not alone.

Default Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

The pain literally started for me two nights ago again.

Twenty-three years old, obese male with same symptoms. I've dealt with the pain in my right foot, usually along the right side and within the center. The only way I can walk without grasping onto something is by curling my foot downward and focusing the weight as far onto the left-most side as I can manage. The pain and light swelling also comes out of nowhere for me.

My weight makes me worry it might be a diabetic symptom, but I've had this issue for longer than I was tested for diabetes, and my results came back negative. Perhaps it's my weight taking its toll after stressed physical activity, but I don't think so. I perform everyday physical activity just the same as every other day, and having the same foot fall prey to this excruciating pain randomly throughout the year just doesn't make any sense.

X-Rays came back negative last time I had it checked out. Exchanged an overall useless doctor for a new one recently, so maybe he'll have more luck finding my problem.

Good luck to everyone else with this problem.

Exclamation Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

I have been getting the same problems now for about
4 yrs. Comes and goes, the original problem was diagnosed as
Kohlers disease, which was funny because usually occurs in kids under
12 and I was 23 at the time. So i was a extremely rare case. There
Is no cure for it, you can have surgery but is very risky and no
Guarantee to fix the problem.
Basically its not enough blood getting to the navicular bone in your foot
And has made the bone very brittle so it flares up in the symptoms very
similar to all that has been talked about here.

Hope this helps

Similar problem...
I take 3 tablespoonfulls of Eniva Flex
(Liquid Glucosomine/chondroitin)
3 times / day on empty stomach

I could barely walk at it's peack.
Now about 95% of the pain is gone.
I can now walk without limping...even run.

Hope this info is helpful.

Default Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

Hello. I am new to this thread. For over a month I have had swelling in both feet and ankles (due to some diabetes and/or thyroid RX I am now taking).

The edema (swelling) is uncomfortable to say the least. But the excruciating pain I feel is ridiculous. I think that the two are unrelated. I only have extreme pain in the right foot.. on top of the foot, near the base of the toes, center top of the foot and for the past couple of days... from the base of the big toe almost towards the ankle and a bit in the arch.

This same thing happened 3 yrs. ago to my left foot. After several visits to the doctor, and getting the "deer in the headlights" stare from my primary doctor, I went to a podiatrist. The podiatrist did initial x-rays again and then ordered a MRI.

Turned out I had edema IN THE BONE (bone-marrow edema). This swelling in the bone was causing my bones to fracture from the inside out. No one could tell me what caused this. At the time I was not taking any RX that was noted to cause any kind of edema.

I had to wear a "boot" walking cast for several weeks which was so hard on my back and really didn't help my foot at all. Those walking casts have absolutely no foot support whatsoever! The next thing the podiatrist did was bind my foot in order to take the pressure off of the nerves that were being effected and causing the pain.

I wore the binding for 5-days, bagging my foot while bathing and it never bothered me again. Amazing.

Due to not being employed right now, I am taking the steps required by the county medical assistance that I am receiving and have just a few days ago received my initial x-rays. Hopefully the next step will be podiatrist as I can't even think right now because the pain is really bad.

The best thing I've found (for me, at least) and was advised during my previous episode, is to get a supportive shoe (athletic) and wear the shoe. Going barefoot just causes the foot to have no support whatsoever. I don't usually even wear shoes in my home, but have been doing so for the past month as it really helps.

Hope this can may be help some of you. And, by the way, once they saw the edema in the bone they thought I might have had leukemia. So then I went through a battery of blood tests weekly for several weeks and by the Grace of God, the tests came back negative. Was worth all the tests to get that negative result.

On another positive note... the foot pain is so severe I don't feel any of my other aches and pains from previous injuries.. lol

WE FOUND THE PROBLEM !!!!

My wife has had the same problems and issues posted. For two years every doctor we spoke with said, a lot of the same things, Gout, sprained ankle, tendinitis, diabetes and the list gos on. We finally found a Doc that sent her to a Vascular specialist. They found issues with the veins in her legs and they called it "Vein Reflux". After blood is pumped down your leg, the veins return blood to your heart. The veins have little valves in them, to keep the blood from going back down between heart beats. With Vein Reflux the valves are not working/closing all the way so, blood ends up pooling in your foot. She is scheduled for surgery.

I hope this helps.

Thumbs down Re: Swollen foot with extreme pain

I suffer from all the same symptoms and am always surprised by how fast it can come and go. I have a theory that it's from too much diet soda. Do any of you folks drink diet soda I do and it seems to exacerbate the issue if not cause it.
