Default trauma to ankle,foot

3 weeks ago I sprained my ankle after jumping off a horse, and landing badly, going over on my left ankle, my ankle immediatly swelled up, and I was unable to put any weight on it. a tri to casualty for an x-ray showed no fracture.
For 2 weeks my leg, has been swollen, with bruising from toe to knee.I have very little movement, can only put my toes down, and can hobble around on my toes. Am continuing to rest, ice compression etc, but there is little improvement.
Am planning to see a Dr tomorrow, but I dont have that much faith in them.
Do you have any other suggestions for therapy that may help?

A substantive answer to your question requires the specialty evaluation you should have gotten at the same time you had your x-ray. Sprains can be VERY serious injuries, and may present consequences far more difficult to deal with and to resolve than does a fracture. Ice, compression and elevation are the appropriate general supportive measures in most cases of extremity sprains, but it was and still is crutial for you to have a knowledgeable grading of the sprain so that appropriate healing procedures can be employed. You need to see a specialist who deals with such conditions, such as a podiatrist or an orthopedist. If your lack of faith in the doctors whom you are about to see is well founded and based in fact, then you should be instead seeking examination by someone qualified to treat such a condition. Appropriate therapy, directed to your specific situation, other than for the generally accepted supportive measures which you seem to have been already doing, can only reasonably be given after and based on an accurate evaluation of your injury status. It is well past the time to stop fooling with this problem and get some real help, or there is every reason to believe that your problems may be of very long duration if not permanent. Until you see an appropriate doctor, if would be best that you avoid weight-bearing on the foot. But get instructions in proper and safe crutch use, if that is what you are going to use, or you might wind up with other and perhaps more serious injuries to other parts of the body in a serious fall.

Well visited an orthopedist, who after a quick look said, to use it with a support (am using a removable plastic cast) then showed me some exercises, and sent me away. So for 2 days now have been doing exercises, and hot, cold baths, and walking on it. I know its painful to rehabilitate an injury of this kind, butjust how much pain? My ankle still remains extremley swollen, and v painful, behind the ankle bone, internal and external, and also across the front, with slight tenderness on the bottom of the tibia, just how much pain, and swelling 1 month on is normal?

How much pain and swelling and how long either "normally" persists after an injury is totally case and patient related and dependent. A sprain can range from anything from a minor annoyance to a severe disability, depending on the force of the trauma, its precise mechanism and location, the ligaments and any other structures involved and the degree of damage inflicted. So, it is not reasonable to expect that someone who is completely in the dark as to the specifics of your case might responsibly and with any degree of accuracy answer the questions you now ask and that you might have any confidence that it would apply to your individual situation . . And after all, having confidence in the answer is the only appropriate reason that one asks a question. As I recall, you were neglectful in obtaining real treatment for several weeks after the incident, and that, along with the further injury likely so-occassioned, no-doubt had the potential for complicating your case and recovery process.

So, thank you for taking the time to update this site on your status, but as you are now under the care of an orthopedist who DOES have the necessary specifics relevant to your case, it is THAT doctor to whom you would address your questions and upon whose responses you should rely. A forum such as this is for the dissemination of general information regarding topics about which no expectations should be held that such information might necessarily apply to an individualized problem, and all trauma is individualized as to its nature and extent. So you would do well to direct your specific case-related questions to the only professional who has taken responsibility for your case.
