Ok, so here's what's going on. I sprained my right ankle almost a full year ago. I have dealt with wearing an air cast while using crutches, wearing a boot with and without crutches, going to physical therapy at least 2 times a week, wearing 2 different kinds of ankle braces, and now they are suggesting/pushing that I have ligament reconstruction surgery. Does anyone know either another step I can take before the surgery, or the effects the surgery will have on my ankle if anything goes wrong/doesn't work the way it's supposed to?

Shouldn't you be discussing with your attending doctor whatever alternatives there might be to surgery in your specific case and the pros and cons of such treatments? If you have already taken that route or having tried it you are then not satisfied with the fruits of that discussion, the appropriate next step would be to obtain additional opinion(s) from other well-vetted specialists. You will potentially be doing yourself a great disservice by considering recommendations about this from persons about whose expertise you are unaware, who do not know the details of your condition and who take no responsibility for your case. Certainly, an integral part of the presentation of any surgery needs to be a full discussion of what adverse effects might accrue if all does not go as planned. If your doctor did not discuss that aspect of the surgery, then he/she was remiss for not doing so. But that does not leave you off the responsibility hook either, as in the absence of such information volunteered by your surgeon, you should have asked just as you are asking here.
