Default Itchy Big Toe

My big toe on my right foot is extremely itchy, i dont have any itchy spots on ANY other part of my foot or any part including big toe on my left foot, its just the part of my right big toe where the toe bends and it has no obvious fungal infection, no redness (except for when i scratch it), and no bumps, etc. just itches and i cant figure out why, no burning, and i know its not Athletes Foot because then i would be itching on both feet most likely and it would be the entire foot.
Discuss, any thoughts/help here?

I have the same problem exactly. I'm scouring the net trying to find what's wrong. I woke up with the crease under my big toe itching like CRAZY. Now at the end of the day (it's been itching all day) it feels stiff - like the skin is stretched.

I too have an itchy big toe... weird, right?! however, mine is on the very tip of my right big toe, close to the nail bed. I have no other symptoms. It is just an itchy spot on the toe with NO redness or bump(s). It has been itching in this one isolated spot for a year and a half, on and off; recently more on than off and driving me (and my husband) crazy! does any body have a clue as to what this could be? neurological?...???

If there are absolutely no skin manifestations, the itching is probably nerve mediated. Itching is a poorly understood phenomena and it may be difficult or impossible to determine a specific cause.

We must all unite. My big toe itches too!!!! Like hell fire and brimstone raining down on the soul of my poor toe!!!!!! I've highly considered cutting it off due to the fact i am afraid that it could be a disease that will spread to my brain and cause my brain to itch uncontrollably. If this happens i promise all of you i will kill myself! Please save my itchy big toe madness.... This isnt contagious is it?!

I just got back from the emergency room. I itched my big right toe into a huge blister. (I rubbed it viciously on any rug I could find to get to the itch.) They x-rayed it, cut the blister open and the flesh is healthy underneath with no signs of fungus and there's no splinter. The doctor wants to send me to a foot doctor in case there's a fungus. After reading all these posts, I'm going to save my money. The only helpful advice I've read on the internet that seems to work is aspirin. I tool one and my toe has settled down for now.

My second toe on me left foot itches like hell all the time. Its the right side on both creases where the toe bends. I itch it to a blister probably once a week, the blister subsides and I'm back at it. The sad part is that I need to use tools to scratch because fingernails just don't do the trick. I too am cosidering amputation! I wish I could find an answer as to what causes the itch.

I'm sure you've not really considering an amputation, but be aware that if your itch is resultant from a nerve problem proximal to the toe, as well it might be if there are no local physical manifestations such as skin eruption, you may well trade an itchiy toe for an itchy "phantom" toe. A phantom appendage is one which continues to have symptoms even after an amputation if the remaining sensory nerve which formerly served it is irritated. You don't however state if the scratching relieves the itching, but scratching a toe which itches because of a proximal nerve problem will not relieve the itching. That may be one way to help discern the locus of the problem.

I have the exact same problem with the first writer. I experienced it for the first time when I had a sick puppy from the shelter living in my house. The puppy turned out to have demodex (as well as distemper), which is a skin problem, creatures living in the skin. Some time later, my big toe started itching like crazy. This happened 3 years ago. Since then it happens every 5-6 months. There is absolutely nothing on the skin except for the fact that I tear it apart from itching. Then suddenly it is gone. A few months later it happens again, sometimes on my other foot. I wonder if it is a type of parasite or was it a coincidence that this whole thing started when I had the sick puppy at home.
By the way the pup died from distemper , the itching doesn't.

Since you mentioned it, there ARE a couple of species of Demodex mites which infect humans, although I don't know what if any symptoms they cause. As far as I know, it is rare that the species that infect dogs infects humans.

My itch is on the ball of the big toe. The itch has come and gone over the last 2 years and it usually returns when I heat my feet in bed with a magic bag (grain bag) and won't go away even though I stop heating my feet. From then on it can be there during the day as well as at night and drives me crazy. Two things work. Using an ice pack on it and/or applying an astringent (in this case distilled witch hazel). I use the ice pack until the itching has been gone awhile. If/when it comes back, and to avoid frost bite, I apply a cotton pad soaked in the witch hazel and tape it on. This I leave on all night so I can sleep. The effectiveness of these 2 things suggests to me there is some swelling that is perhaps pressing on a nerve to cause the itch. I hope that helps since I know how after a while the itch does make amputation seem desirable.

It is some comfort to know that I am not the only one in the universe with an unexplained itching in my big toe- the inside side of my left one in my case. It occurs without any known cause and can last for weeks, sometimes itching quite intensely. No external symptoms and scratching it has does not relieve the itch.

Default Itchy 2nd Toe

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this issue. My husband looks at me as if I'm crazy as I'm doing all but tearing my toe off on the rug. Thank you Foot Doc for sharing the information to deter me from chopping off my toe if it ever comes to that. I must say it would really stink to be without a toe and still be itchy. I will be trying the ice pack and some witch hazel tonight. Happy Valentine's Day!

I have the same exact symptoms! I have had them for a few years but thought perhaps I was going crazy as I've never heard of anyone else experiencing this . I have tried athlete's foot cream even though I now it isn't athlete's feet. The itching can be really bad. Thanks for the sanity check. Nerves never occurred to me but I'll explore this angle. Thanks...

I too suffer with an itchy big toe. The ball of my right toe itches all the time. I do not notice as much during the day because I am so busy at work, but at night the itching drives me crazy. Berber rugs, hair brushes, pen caps, coffee table edges, the spiral wire of notebooks are objects I use to help relieve the itch.
This itchy toe craziness started three years ago. I wonder if I damaged some nerve by participating in a "Polarbear Plunge" event.

Could it be that your toe is just itchy? just like any other part of your body. everyone has the same symptoms and they itching isnt constant. so could it be its just an unusual spot to have an itch so that is why it seems like something is wrong. people itch all day on different body parts. It is very possible that all the itch is, is an itch. I too have an itch that happens on my big right toe every once in a while. but my thumb itches also, and so does my arm and shoulder and back, etc.

omgosh
i'm not the only oe!!
my left big toe has been itchy for over a year
except my itch is all over the big toe, esp. at the crease+inside crease -____-
the top of my big toe also itches, the skin right near the cuticle of the nail.
in order to stop itching it, I put a band-aid over it, but I usually end up ripping off the band-aid and just scratching it like CRAZY
I thought I was the only one. I actually have a small bump on the inside crease, but that's probably from my super scratching.

for as long as i can remember BOTH my big toes have had an itch AS WELL as my thumbs!!!! The rest of my toes and fingers are fine.... I am constantly scratching them, every 20 seconds if i think of them. There are no bumps and i don't think i've got skin problems because i'd think other fingers/toes woukd have thesame problem..... It's an absolute pain in the butt!

I too have the itchy big toe. I went to the doctor and he sold some stuff for $40 that made it feel even worse. It was this nail polish kind of stuff. He also gave me a fungus cream. It doesn't look or feel like a fungus. It just itches like crazy. I'm surprised no one knows what it is. My nail also is beginning to discolor, ugh. I think it's some kind of virus but who knows.

try removing a little layer by scratching on a pediboard and then with tiger balm or alcohol applied the itching becomes a nice tolerable burning sensation for a while. I have also used the ice packs to numb it.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but it's true. I had the exact same thing for a few years and it drove me insane. I had it both on my big toe, and on my right index finger. I went to a variety of doctors and eventually wound up at a dermatologist's office. He told me the strangest thing - my itch, as localized as it was, was an allergy. Nothing else on my body itched, but like you all, I would use anything I could get my hands on to alleviate the itch. Believe it or not, I was allergic to my shampoo. Why it affected my TOE and not, say, my SCALP, is beyond me, but he said it's not uncommon. I used to actually bite the skin around my finger nail to stop the itching, and when I couldn't bite it hard enough for fear of hurting myself, I had my boyfriend do it (no, nothing kinky there, just couldn't stand the itch). It was almost like the poster above said about burning it - it felt great, till it get irritated.

Anyway, as nutty as it sounds, you may be allergic to something you're using and that's how your body is manifesting the allergy. Once I figured out what it was I was allergic to - I switched out laundry detergent, soap, etc. until I no longer had the itch, and the offending factor was shampoo - the itch just disappeared. The key is to do them one at a time, so you can isolate what it is you're allergic to. If you change everything at once, you won't know which was the trigger.

Something to think about...

Some of you suggested vinegar. I just kept spilling wine vinegar on my big toe and it now feels better. It stopped itching completely. It is still red but at least the itch has subsided.

My right big toe has had a pin point itch right below the nail for about 15 years now. My right thumb also has it to a milder extent. Been to so many docters and nothing has helped. Fungus creams to cortisone injections, and nothing!!. Extreme cold can numb the itch. I even find myself using a nail clipper to hack off the skin.. the pain is far better then the itch.

Iam curious to see about the allergy thing... hard to say what ive been using for 15 years though..

I get it under the nail of my pointer finger, too. I have jabbed it with a pin, scraped a nail file over it - you name it, I've done it. Miserable, I know. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has this problem! When I first started talking to my doctor about it, she thought I was nuts!

Yeah sometimes i still think iam nuts haha. After having this for such a long time.. most of the time i can blank it out for periods of time. It goes through cycles of getting bad to worse. When i was a kid Id make holes in my sneakers from picking at my toe.

Only thing i really havent tried is the allergy side of it. Maybe ill start with some hypo allergenic shampoo haha

This sounds very similar to what I have, although it is not my big toe, but the tops of three of my toes on one foot and one toe on my other foot that itch like crazy. I've had this for ten years and have tried cortizone and antifungal creams but nothing has worked. No one knows what it is. It doesn't spread to anywhere else and is not contagious. Heat makes it worse, dry or moist heat, and I've resorted to icing my toes to get the heat to go down, and the itch. When I itch it like crazy after a while I get a callous on top, which makes it even worse, but seems to help when I exfoliate it with a nail or foot file. I've tried witch hazel, tea tree, fresh garlic, white vinegar, apple cider vinegar. What helps the most is an ice foot bath and just not letting my feet get hot. I've heard it can be a result of an excess of candida in the body and am considering going on a candida cleanse. My father had a similar problem on his fingers, went on the candida cleanse and it cleared it. It's a tough cleanse though.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the possibility of gout. It most commonly occurs in the big toe, and responds unfavorably to the application of heat. Just a thought.
