Unhappy stabbing at night in arch of foot.

Stabbing pain that comes and goes about every 30 seconds in the uper area of the arch on my right foot. It started at 4 a.m. yesterday morning and went away after being up for the rest of the day. I went to bed at 11 P.M. and woke up with the same pain this morning and can't find a way to get any relief. I wrapped it tight with an ace bandage and that didn't help. I sitting here at 3 a.m. because I can't sleep. The pain seems to be at the upper part of the arch and when I push on the area it fells like tissue around the bones that I feel. It is a stabbing pain and it comes and goes over and over.

Thank you; Larry

You did not mention whether if push on the spot where the pain occurs it elicits the pain when it is not present or increases the pain if it is. I ask this to determine whether the pain is of local origin or if possibly it occurs at night because of your sleeping position causing pressure on a remote nerve, and that is perceived as pain in the area which it serves. Other than that, and with only the facts at hand, it is quite difficult to assess the origin of a pain that comes on only sporadically and precipitously without any notable exciting causes. It might be helpful to know of any unusual weight-bearing activities in which you participated just prior to the onset of your problem and of any visible or physical changes which take place during episodes such as swelling and color change or temperature changes.

Smile Re: stabbing at night in arch of foot.

I made an appointment with a foot doc., he ended upp gicing me a shot of cortizone after trying to determine what is causing the problem. It is probably due to nerve endings. I have had the same problem with the big toe on my left foot for years if the nail isn't kept cut back. If ig grows out to far, I get knife atabbing pains in my toe and up my leg. Thats two different foot Docs. that have said I'am weired. I finally got some sleep and feel great again. The area he injected is the heel end of the arch towards the top was where it hurt when he pushed on it.

All pain, and in fact all sensation has to do either with either nerve endings or something along the course of the nerves or within the area of the brain in which the sensation is registered and appreciated. Unfortunately, as a local injection of corticosteroid so often mitigates symptoms of even undiagnosed problems . . at least temporarily, its use is many time simply empiric, but very often effects only a short-lived "cure," and certainly does not establish a diagnosis on which specific treatment might be formulated. I don't know that such constitutes your being "weird," but It is certainly stretches credulity, to consider that a simple matter of a toenail growing out would cause similar stabbing pains all the way from your toe to up your leg. Perhaps your notion of cause and effect is not accurate.

Hey Larry,
You are not wierd. I've had this problem off and on for a couple of years. I haven't gone to a doctor because it does seem to come on for a few weeks and then finally subsides. It's very painful and I get it like you at night. I do like high heels and sometimes when I'm shopping it will flare up and the pain feels like it runs from the inside of my arch right up my leg and my leg feels kinda weak until the pain stops.

I agree about it keeping you up at night and have no idea why that is when it seems to flare up most often, but it's definitely not a pain you could sleep through. I read about an excersise on another website where you put your leg in your lap indian style and push up on the ball of your foot while strumming the tendon in your arch like a guitar string with your other hand. I'm going to try it, it couldn't hurt.

Well Good Luck,

Lisa
