Default Avulsion Fracture questions

About 10 days ago, I fell while roughhousing with my husband. I am a “serial sprainer” but felt different about this fall. I went to the ER and was diagnosed with a fibula fracture, the doctor said it was actually an avulsion fracture and said that the treatment was like that of a severe sprain. I was sent home in an air splint; two days later the swelling and numbness in my toes got so bad, I went back to the ER where I was put in a posterior splint, also referred to as a “soft-cast”. The swelling and numbness is still bad and I haven’t been able to get in with an Orthopedist, I was able to make an appointment for late next week. An ortho nurse called to confirm the appointment and told me that I could remove the splint but to stay off the foot as much as possible.

Since removing the splint yesterday, there is still remarkable swelling, my toes are still tingling to numb, and any movement of my leg results in a feeling of intense pressure in my ankle, both sides of the ankle are swollen and curling my toes causes pain along the back side of my ankle and leg. I have been prescribed pain meds that help some but not completely. My concern is that more damage has been done than expected, shouldn’t the swelling have gone down by now, and why is there pain into my leg? Is all of this synonymous with an avulsion fracture or does it sound like something else has happened?

If I were you I would stress to the orthopedist about the numbness you are experiencing and insist on an immediate appointment, especially if the ER is ignoring your complaints or doesn't know how to handle them.

make sure you see a podiatric surgeon and get it xrayed. i had same thing in may. just feeling better now where i can walk a full hour. it's been 14 weeks. i didn't need surgery - but had to use a frature walker for 4-6 weeks. then been very careful ... keeping it raised and iced. good luck. be careful - treat it kindly. mine is 90% healed.
