Default 5th metatersal fracture

Hi,

I am a thirty year old female. I slipped and broke my left foot's fifth metatarsal bone three weeks ago, I went to the doctor after walking on it for a day mistaking it for an ankle sprain. I was told it was a jones fracture or more of an avulsion fracture takes from 6-8 weeks to heal if I don't step on it, the doctor gave me crouches and a walking cast. I am sick of staying at home all day waiting for the bone to heal. so worried it won't and keep on thinking if I would ever return like I was before; as I was a very active person who runs in high heels without any pain. Will I ever be able to dance in high heels again and when? Has anybody had a 5th metatarsal fracture before if yes, is returning to normal possible

Devastated Susan

I greatly prefer the descriptive naming of conditions rather than the use of a doctor's name who had classically described it. It is not unusual that an avulsion fracture of the styloid process of the 5th metatarsal, a condition commonly associated with inversion injuries of the foot and ankle sprains, is sometimes but incorrectly termed a Jones Fracture. So, I really don't know what you have sustained, although from the treatment you've related it does seem to be more consistent with an actual Jones fracture. If it IS a Jones fracture, it can be one of the more difficult fractures of the foot to heal properly, and sometimes surgical intervention is favored over simple non-weight bearing casting. But that is a judgment call for the attending, and I am not in a position to suggest whether or not the correct choice was made. With good healing, there is every reason to be hopeful that you will be able to dance in high heels (providing you could before), but this is not a fracture for which even good healing can be routinely predicted. You need to be followed very closely and need to strictly follow your doctor's instructions. Otherwise you may REALLY be devastated.
