Default foot odor........no cure

I have been to a doctor and podiatrist. The podiatrist said it was in my head and my feet don't stink. I'm getting very mad. The doctor said there's really no cure.
I don't really have sweaty feet. They just smell. I mostly notice it when I"m sitting at my desk at work. I can take off my shoe and sock and neither really stink. My foot either. If I use baby powder, my feet really get hot. Almost a burn feeling like im on hot pavement. But not really sweaty. I try different shoes each day sometimes. I've tried new shoes and they smell instantly. But not the shoes. I've tried the antibacterial soap daily. dry before I put socks on. I'm very frustrated. There's nothing visual on my feet. It's almost like it turns off and on in minutes. Like when I went to the podiatrist, he said to remove my shoes and socks and he'll be back. Well, when I do that the smell goes away. both feet and socks and shoes don't smell!!
HELP!!

I have never come across a case of foot odor (medically termed bromhidrosis) where the smell goes away immediately after the shoes and/or socks are removed or even long after. It might have been an unfortunate statement by the podiatrist to have said that it's in your head (if he/she really put it that way), but foot odor is not something that is a matter of personal or individual opinion. It's generally offensive enough to clear out a room, and you can be sure that your or any podiatrist is familiar with it. Has anyone else ever complained of your foot odor?

no, no one else has ever said anything, but why would they? Most people wouldn't. I don't know, but it is real. I thought about actually confronting people I work with to get their honest opinion and bring it out in the open.

Though, thankfully, not having the ability to test out your assertion of foot odor myself, I would have to conclude that if your podiatrist, who probably had his nose at your foot level, your physician, who likely did not want to say what he/she really felt and if no other folks have mentioned your foot odor to you, that the problem is your "sniffer" and not your feet. Apparently, you have no conception of how potent and offensive foot odor is. Believe me, it's not something that others will keep from you as they scurry out of the room holding their noses. If you don't believe me and your doctors, then ask you friends and associates.

OMG! I have the same problem except my feet are sweaty, but i've been to many many doctors, including GP, podiatrist, and derm. and nothing they gave me worked, and most of them tell me there is no solution as well, but how could that be? You can also smell mine through my shoes and i mean it can be smelled from feet away it's so embarassing. I have had to quit many jobs b/c of it, but like you said my shoes and socks don't smell when i take them off and oddly enough neither does my feet. Th smell is usually worse when im at work and it happens at the oddest times, but its constant at work, it's not in my head and i am not paranoid, and neither are you so dont give up on trying to find a solution and don't take no (solution) for an answer

Oh and by the way i have tried a product called SWEET FEET made by Dr. Harold Katz and it worked for me for a while (but like everything else it eventually stopped working) but maybe you'll have better luck with it

Please keep me posted if anything works for you, and i will do the same, right now i am trying tons of stuff and praying that at least one of works, this is really difficult to deal with and has cost me a lot of heart ache, and no one seems to understand how this can affect you emotionally, socially, and physically (the stress) well at least with me it has. I hope that we both find something that works. Best of luck.

I have had this same problem for years...no one can fully understand the amount of anxiety it causes. If my feet only smelled when I took my shoes off, I wouldn't be so concerned. But, you can smell it with shoes and socks on, and I have tried everything possible under the sun...including iontophoresis, botox, every possible cream and good hygiene etc. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them. I can't imagine I will hear anything that I haven't already tried. It's beyond frustrating.

Exactly whose problem have you had for years? Is it that of the original poster who seemed to be the only one who smelled her smelly feet, or was it another poster who said she had the same problem but that she had sweaty feet. You say you've tried EVERYTHING POSSIBLE, but you haven't mentioned if YOUR feet are sweaty or if that EVERYTHING included the use of an anti-perspirant such as Drysol.

I have had the foot odor problem...yes and at times my feet have been sweaty,,,and at times the doc seems to think I'm making a big deal out of nothing...so I can relate to the previous posts. I have tried EVERYTHING including Drysol which just made my feet smell like chemicals. The sweat has reduced somewhat over time with many different products, but the odor problem is as bad or worse than ever

Yes, many times I have been told that my feet smell...or people will just say "what's that smell"?

You have probably heard that if you get sprayed by a skunk, the remedy is to soak in tomato juice. Well, a remedy that I have used for years involves filling a dishpan with tomato juice. Add quite a bit of Tabasco. Coat your feet with Preparation H and then soak them for 30 minutes. This will, in most cases, releive the smell. Do this once daily if needed. Let me know how it works for you.

I must say that until you got to the Preparation H, it was sounding rather refreshingly tasty. Have you ever tried or considered replacing it with vodka?

Actually, Preparation H is key to the process. You see, it shrinks the pores in the skin such that the stink stays within. Vodka, if provided to those in the room, will certainly allow those offended to somewhat "mellow" with their disgust.

Unhappy Re: foot odor........no cure

I have also tried drysol, it did help to keep my feet drier than usual, but the smell was still there and since it didn't eliminate the problem there was no point in using it, I don't care if my feet sweats as long as people around don't smell it, I just had to quit another job because of this, people kept spraying things in my area, making comments and giving evil stares and i couldn't handle it any longer, I just don't understand it! Sometimes I think i finally figured out a solution just to see people staring at my feet all day with looks of disgust and then i know that the smell is still there.

DOC, are you a licensed podiatrist? and if so, how could this be happening it doesn't make sense i know that the bacteria is the root of it, (I"VE done tons of research) but shouldn't my feet at least smell when i take my shoes off??? Can i be allergic to the fabric in shoes? I'm assuming we have an OVERgrowth of bacteria growing, is there a way to eliminate the bacteria permanetly instead of trying to get rid of the sweat?

And to the others on the thread do you have any other kind of "health issues" like, lactose-intolerant, digestive problems, other odor, diabetes etc.????

Oh and when i buy new shoes they usually smell instanly too, and then after a while(week or two) the smell isn't as bad, I have also had a burning sensation from time to time, I dont know if it's true or not but i read that that is the bacteria multipling or feeding off of the sweat, and my problem seems to be a lot worse while at work, is this the case with anyone else?

Why don't we ALL list the symptoms we have to compare notes.... I'll start

I'm: female(gross i know)
First noticed when: about three months after I started working in a factory(steel toe boots), I actually got them from my sister who had them for a couple of years. She could have stored them away in a garage or something before i borrowed them, idk.
Doc said: not fungal infection(athletes foot)
It's usually worse when i wear: tennis shoes, leather shoes while at work

SYMPTOMS:
dry skin
hard yellowish calluses(which im trying to get rid of)
very sweaty
burning sensation sometimes
itching occasonially
feet are usually warm
no smell on feet or in shoes
toenails yellow(i was told that was from sll the sweat)

That's all i can think of for now, sorry these messages are so long but i think the more info. we can give or get the better chance we have to figure out a solution for it...

Why, To-be-or-not-to-be, have you all this time been claiming that you have smelly feet, and now, in your last post, under SYMPTOMS, you state, "no smell on feet or in shoes?" Sounds to me like you're CURED!

No I'm sorry there may be a misunderstanding, just as drumshooter posted in their very first post, there is a foot odor, but it only happens when my shoes are ON, but when i take my shoes off and smell them there is no smell in my actual shoe nor is there a smell on (or coming from) my feet or my socks. The smell happens while im wearing the shoes...

You just said it again . . . that your shoes don't smell, your feet don't smell but you only note the odor when the foot is in the shoe. What you are saying makes not sense, and perhaps that's why you haven't been satisfied with any help that has been offered.

Well, I don't know what to say, I can't be any more clear, that is what is happening, and I will have to agree with you it makes no sense FOR THE ODOR TO ONLY OCCUR WHEN IT IS INSIDE THE SHOE, but it does...and I'm not the only nor the first, to say this is happening on this thread that is part of the reason why I joined in on the discussion b/c someone else had a similiar problem. It seems like your being more pessimistic and judgemental than helpful. Are you a licensed Doctor or is that just a screen name?

I think that with a situation that not only I, but you agree makes no sense, it is difficult to be anything BUT pessimistic that you will receive a helpful answer. It is my job as a doctor to make judgments, so if that's being judgmental, so be it.

It is certainly possible to have an unusual body odor for a number of reasons, but such would not be limited to the feet, and would not be considered "foot odor." Actual foot odor is typically caused by the action and metabolic products of bacteria on sweat or less commonly and in specific cases by bacterial or mycotic infection, necrosis of tissue or urine spilled by poor hygiene in an incontinent patient. General body odor is not a subject dealt with in a foot forum.

Unregistered guest and sprintpcic,
I know that we are not alone, and we are not the only people with this problem, although Sometimes it feels like we are. I know there has to be a cure, there has to be b/c I can't live my life like this, in fact right now im not living my life at all. But I know we have to keep trying, and keeping each other posted. Sprintpcic, you said that your doc said it may have something to do with digestion problems ( constipation). I too suffer from constant constipation and poor diet, I also think I may be lactose intolerant. So maybe diet is the key, I was just thinking about going on a fast, drinking only tomatoe juice(which is suppose to help with B/O)and water for a week and seeing if that works, but i wont start that until after turkey day lol.

Question: Do both of you suffer from constipation? lactose intolerant?

Foot Doc,

I apologize if I came off the wrong way, but it is very fustrating when people try to tell you your "problem" is not a problem and it's all in your head or you are making this up or they think you are lying or exaggerating. I just want to work together to find a solution for this problem so I can get my life back on track and help a few other people in the process.
