55 YO male, life long runner. Ideal weight, very few injuries. For the last couple of months have experienced very intermitent, mild tenderness in left arch of foot. Self-massage would resolve the issue quickly. Then on 1/18/13 I experienced slightly more discomfort following 2nd run of the day [doubles are not uncommon for me] and the next day the same thing after performing plyometric drills [bounding, jumping]. Then that evening my foot began to have a dull ache in the arch. I only experience this while running, never at rest. The next morning I couldn't put weight on my arch and had to walk on the outside / medial edge of my foot. Pronating my foot inwards was painful. Same deal the next morning but by noon was much better. The pain was in two areas; just in front of the ankle bone on the posterior side of foot and along the posterior side of the arch about mid-foot. Nothing elsewhere.

Appt with ortho the following morning who after hearing my story and examining me [rotating foot, checking strength] said I had "displaced my Cuneiform bone" [not sure if he said which one]. But that I could resume running that day. I ran 3 miles the next day and 8 miles the follwoing three days but then took a day off because the foot wasn't improving [but not really worse either]. Stop running for 5 days, each day the foot felt better. Arche in front of ankle bone was gone and the arch only hurt when I pressed very hard against it. Tested it last Friday; run for 1/4 mile, take short rest interval, repeat. After a mile I felt very slight niggling in the arch, so I stopped. The following morning the foot felt no worse.

He said the bone should slip back into position itself or through manipulation. Told me to roll a lacrosse ball under my foot should it happen again. I've watched videos where they extract the metatarsal and manipulate the Cuneiform from the top of the foot toward the arch where you could hear it "pop" back into place.

My question. How should I rehab this injury? Will the bone slip back into position or will a podiarist have to do this? It's been about two week since the injury, given my symptoms how soon should I expect to resume running? Do I just need to give it more rest or should I seek further medical attention? TIA.

Just want to add more detail about my original symptoms. The foot almost felt like something shifted / displaced and became "stiff" / lost mobility.

    Re: Cuneiform displacement

Also what type of specialist should I see next? Podiatrist or chiropractor specializing in sports medicine?
