If it only occurs after lying down, it may be the result of nerve pressure due to body position
I have the same issue on my left foot. Only difference is that mine is all of the time, not just when I lay down. My doctor said that it was possible that the nerve is traveling along the bunion & causing the toe to go numb. (my big toe is numb and I feel stabbing needle pain at least 3x a day where the base of the foot meets the big toe.)
I totally can't believe I found someone that is experiencing the same symptom as myself. About a week ago, while lying down, I felt as if there was a string or thin thread tied around my big toe. I bent my leg to look at my toe and thought "wow", there isnothing there...I really thought there was a string wrapped around my toe. I have been having this sensation on and off for about a week and it is mainly when I am lying on my stomach and my toes are pressed against my bed. I keep telling my husband it feels as if I have string tied around my big toe (that is really the only way to describe it) and he basically looks at me like I have 2 heads (heheh). THe feeling is totally bizarre and more of an annoyance. It is strange how it truly feels like there is something there. Well, I am just going to deal with it and am very happy that 1) I am NOT crazy & 2) I am not alone.
I have also experienced the same feeling - as if there was something tied on the inside of my big toe. I have asked 2 doctors and got the same response that it is tied to a nerve. I check all the time for circulation issues or numbness and have neither (the feeling is just inside the toe). Just a very odd feeling.
Try chiropractic! I've been experiencing the exact same thing on the 3 middle toes of my left foot. I plan on visiting my chiropractor tomorrow since so many of you suggest that it's tied to a nerve issue. After all, chiropractors are specialists of the spine and how it may interfere with the nerve system.
wow, i can't believe i found other people with this same issue. i go to a chiropractor every few weeks/months and i've been wanting to go again recently. i'll let everyone on here know what i find out after i go. i've been feeling like i have a band-aid around the base of my right big toe. sounds similar to others on this site.
Are you diabetic? I am and have been having the same exact feeling....a string around my toe...I am afriad it is nerve damage due to high blood sugar.....

I have it too....only it's my little pinky toe on my left foot and I swear it feels like there is maybe a hair or string wrapped around it... not painful...just really weird.
To the person that said to go to a doctor for this......if I went to the doctor for every wierd little thing I felt. I would probably not have much time for anything else!
So, how's getting cured THIS way been workin' out for ya?
Wow!!! you jumped on that pretty quickly. I had that post up for like 5 minutes!! I actually just removed that part because I thought I was kinda mean....you sound like a nice doc
I too am having the feeling of a string wrapped around my toes. Has anyone actually been told by a doctor what it could be and what to do about it? Everyone I have actually talked to about it has never heard of it. so glad I'm not alone
I recently began getting the same sensation. I thought I had a hair wrapped around my toe causing it to feel a little numb. There is nothing there and it is driving me insane! Glad to know I'm not the only person out there with this!
Holy Moley!! I'm shocked to find this thread too! I have this sensation as well, my right big toe, and most often it bothers me when I walk down stairs. What is it?? I see no reason to see my dr about it. There's no pain or disfigurement, and it would just be way too strange to bring up. "Doc, my toe feels like it has a string around it!! Does this qualify for lots of painful & expensive medical tests?"
I have this too, on both my big toes. I am quite surprised there are so many people with the same thing. I attribute it to edema (swelling) of the feet, but don't know why the edema. It concerns me that diabetes got mentioned, so I will check with my doctor next visit.
wow, I guess we all have the same feeling. My toe by the big toe feels like a bandage wraped around it and like it fell asleep. i had this problem for 3 days i'm going to the doctors in an hour so wish me luck. btw how long does it last its driveing me nuts
I too have been feeling like this on my left big toe, was interested to hear edema mentioned as I had this problem a few years ago on my other foot and not too long after developed lymphedema in that ankle / foot and leg (bit freaked out now that histor may be repeating itself) however i do a lot of running and sport and think that the pain could be down to a recent half marathon, its training and/or needing new trainers. I have been told that if you are wearing poorly fitting shoes or slip on type then your foot has to work harder to keep them on your feet (or something to that effect) and can over work ligaments/muscles etc. wondered if there was any truth in this? The sensation is more annoying that pain.
I am having the same prob...But i hate these threads like this b/c all people do is talk about their problems with out getting any answers...can anyone answer anything about our toes being numb? And just don't say "go to the DR"
OK I too have the phantom string or long hair around my large toe syndrome. What happened to the person who checked with a doctor?

I have this on my middle toes. Last time I went to the dr I mentioned it. He checked that I didn't have a clot and then sent me for an xray and ultrasound....NOTHING. He said it could be just nerve damage as it started after I got pregnant with my first child I had chronic fankles. I sleep on my stomach and was wondering if having your feet flexed back might have something to do with it.
Wow me too, I thought I would do a googelsearch on this topic and lo and behold... I have had this conditionfor years, probably related to diabetes, It gets better after I do my insulin though,,

I too have been having that sensation around both of my big toes. It happened about 2 months ago. I also have a strange sensation on the bottoms of my feet. It feels as though I have pieces of strafoam in my shoes. I went to the foot doctor and he took x-rays and did an examination and sent me for blood work to rule out diabetes. I have no fractures and I do not have diabetes. I regularly go to the chiropractor weekly (for about 20 years) and I did tell him about it but my back is in good condition. I cannot imagine what it is - it is not painful, just annoying. If I stand up and bend the tops of my big toes down to touch the floor, it feels like a string tied around my big toes. Does anyone know what is causing this problem. Is it nerve related and will it get better??
I have seen a chiro, an accupuncturist and a dr and no one has solved this mystery. Might ask the physio down the road if they have heard of anything. Can't hurt to try.
I think I might have an answer for some of you. I get this sensation from time to time on various toes.... like there is one of my girlfriends long hairs wrapped around a toe. I believe it is some kind of fungus, something like tinea or athletes foot, so I treat it with anti fungus cream and after a few days the sensation disappears. I would be interested in hearing results from anyone else if they try this remedy. Even though it seems to work for me, I came looking at this topic hoping to find confirmation of my theory.
