My big toe nail on my left foot has been funky for a few years. It doesn't appear to be growing, it's very thick and it's texture is much different from all my other nails, it's coloring is off, it's brittle and it has the appearance of having cracks. As I said, it's been like this for years and although the appearance is ugly, I can live with it as I'm not someone who goes barefoot very often. It's becoming an issue now because a few weeks ago a friend of mine accidentally stepped on my foot and didn't realize it for a few seconds and he's a very heavy guy so the weight was a lot on my toe. Unfortunately, it was that big toe that got the brunt of it, and now it seems like the top part of my nail is pressing into my skin and it hurts terribly if I put ANY pressure on it in that specific spot. I want to just go to a doctor but I'm in a terrible place financially right now and I don't have insurance for anything like this. If anyone has any idea what it is my toe nail is experiencing based on what I described, I'd be very grateful for insight. Secondly, if anyone knows any home remedies I can try, that would be great.

There are probably no home remedies. It needs to be reduced with a nail burr by a podiatrist.

I actually was able to remove the part of the nail that was sticking into my skin and it feels so much better. As for the nail quality itself, I did a lot of research and I have a family member who had the same condition, and she soaked her foot in vinegar and water 15 minutes every day and the nail was back to great condition in a few months, so I'm going to try that.
