Lisfranc question

    Hi,

I had surgery for lisfranc injury on June 19. (I tore the lisfranc ligaments and fractured two toes when I missed the last of three steps.) At my orthopedist's recommendation, I had one screw inserted to stabilize the joint and was nonweight-bearing for four weeks and then wore a walking boot for another four weeks. Ugh!

The problem came when I started to phase out of the boot during physical therapy. I began to have fairly severe pain on the top of my foot, especially when I walk more than a block or so. My orthopedist thinks the screw is causing the pain. Apparently, it's doing its job too well; the screw is holding the joint too tightly and it lacks flexibility.

At this point, he's suggesting that I get an orthotic to wear in my shoe and have the screw removed at the end of Oct. (when I'll be 4 months post-op). He mentioned the possibility of replacing the screw with a K-wire, but I'm reluctant to jump into another surgery so soon--particularly since this was never mentioned as a possible outcome of the first surgery.

Anyone have a similar experience or know if this is a "standard" protocol (given that all lisfranc injuries seem somewhat idiosyncratic).

    Thanks in advance.

    Joyce
