My ten year old daughter saw a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine for treatment of Sever's Disease that has bothered her for almost seven months. He said that from her x-rays that her growth plate was smashed up against the heel bone in her foot and her growth plate was very jagged and uneven. His nurses said they had never seen x-rays like hers before and they had never treated such a bad case of Sever's Disease. He treated her with light therapy (sorry don't remember the real name) and then put her in flexible viscopaste casts (from just above her ankles to her toes). She is to weight bear as little as possible. These casts will stay on for one week and then be removed and depending on how she feels be re-applied for up to six times = 6 weeks. He then mentioned possible surgery to fix her growth plate, and said it could affect the size of her feet, but then said her bones looked a good size already. This is when I started feeling uneasy. I didn't think surgery was a treatment for Sever's Disease.
Are we on the right track or should I follow my uneasy feeling and get another opinion??

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I think you will find agreement among most podiatrists and orthopedists that not much if anything can actually be concluded from the x-ray appearance of the area of the growth center of the calcaneus in Sever's. I don't know what was seen, but I cannot specifically tell on x-ray if a patient has Server's or not, and the only reason I take one in a suspected case is to rule out other disease processes, tumors and fractures. Normal growth plates frequently look jagged and sclerotic on x-rays. I don't have any idea of what you are talking about with "light therapy." Casting is valid treatment for severe cases. I would have to conclude that if a competent doctor is talking about a surgical procedure on the growth plate, there is something going on more serious than Sever's. When you say the growth plate was smashed, do you mean traumatically?

Thank you for answering my question about surgery - I won't let anyone operate on her feet while the diagnosis remains Sever's Disease.
The Podiatrist said that there should be a space between her growth plate and her heel bone, and on her x-ray her growth plate looked like it had been smashed up against her heel bone, he wondered if it is from her pounding on her heels during sports.
My daughter has been wearing the flexible casts for three days know and is able to stand and take a few steps wihout pain, so maybe we are going in the right direction.
The Podiatrist is also talking orthotics to protect her heel, once she is pain free.
