Toenail regrowth after avulsion

My daughter had a big toe nail avulsion 2.5 months ago. Now it feels like the nail is regrowing at the base of the toe. It is very painful. I'm not sure how to explain, but I can feel the nail growing out toward the side of her toe. Not growing up toward the tip of the toe, but growing at a 90 degree angle like it is trying to break through the right side of her actual toe. She has an appointment in 10 days, but we are trying to figure out what we can do to ease the pain until then. Also, what can we expect the podiatrist to do at her appointment? Thanks for any input!

The toenail will regrow if they nail matrix was not removed or destroyed at the time of the avulsion.
Invariably an avulsion does damage the matrix and they often grow back with a deformity.
There really is not much you can do yourself at this stage; can you get an earlier appt rather than wait the 10 days?
