I’m a 65 year old female and 6 months post-op from a big toe fusion. It has taken this long for pain to lessen and I still have swelling. I’m going to PT but so far it is not helping me to walk normally. I have pain everywhere else in my foot and ankle joints. I was a very active person before and now I cannot walk. Is there anyone with a success story with this surgery? Since I can’t push off of my toes, how can I get my gait back? I can’t even find shoes that fit. I don’t know if they should be stiff or if I should try flexible shoes like barefoot shoes.

6 months is a bit long. Suggest you head back to the surgeon for advice. It is hard to give any advice in a forum like this without knowing exactly what structure(s) are painful and seeing how you are currently walking.
