I am a 85 year old man. At 3 am I woke to find the big toe of my left foot bent straight up! I had to walk until it relaxed. This had happened about a month ago to my right foot. What can cause this, a nerve problem or a circulatory problem or something else?

Yes, that is most likely neurological or less likely a muscle cramp. If it keeps happening, then it would be wise to get it checked out.
